  2. Historical Significance - 1995 • Republicans gain control of House and the Senate, first time since 1955. • Heat wave kills 750 in Chicago, which brought attention to urban poorness and elderly in extreme conditions

  3. 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing • Bomb attack on Alfred P. Murrah FederalBuilding in downtown Oklahoma City on April 19th. • Killed 168 and wounded 800 • Arrests of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols • As a result of the bombing, the U.S. government passed legislation designed to increase protection around federal buildings.

  4. Historical Significance - 1996 • Khobar Towers Bombing leaves 19 U.S. servicemen dead in Saudi Arabia • Centennial Olympic Park Bombing at Summer Olympics in Atlanta kills 1 and injures 111 • Bill Clinton reelected

  5. Historical Significance - 1997 • President Clinton bars all federal funding on any research for human cloning. • Princess Diana dies in car crash. • UK Hands Hong Kong to China. • Mother Teresa dies.

Historical Significance - 1998 • Former Arkansas state employee Paula Jones accuses President Clinton of sexual harassment. • 224 killed in 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Tanzania and Kenya. • Clinton admits in a televised address to having illegal relations with ex-White House admin Monica Lewinsky.

Historical Significance - 1999 • Dennis Hastert of Illinois becomes Speaker of the House, a position he would hold until 2007 • Dow Jones Industrial Average above 10,000 for first time. • Tornado in Oklahoma kills 50 people, first to cause $1 billion in damage. • Day of Six Billion: Proclaimed 6 billionth human being born.

Y2K • People thought that there would be problems with the clocks on computers because they would be going from 99 (1999) to 00 (2000). • It was thought that computers would all break down and cause major problems. • There were many reported problems on the day of Jan. 1st 2000, but it is thought that the clocks are not the problem.
