  2. Good Evening! • I think you would agree that Rm 214 is a great new home for Elementary Seminar. • Northley Seminar is on a ‘cart’ in the science rooms. I have heard that the new Northley will have a Seminar room, hopefully with a sink and storage space. • Ms. Renee DiPietro was hired in October to work with seminar students in grades 7 through 12.

  6. Paper Work • Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year the GIEP form will change. • Present level information must to be more detailed and specific. • It has been suggested by the state that ‘end of the year assessments’ of the year ahead be administered to all gifted support students in at least the areas of reading, math, science, and social studies. • Information from parent, teacher, and student surveys should be included. • PA Gifted Regulations in Chapter 16 have not changed recently.

  7. Gifted Paperwork • The purpose of this change in paperwork is to improve and clarify the instructional plan. • This change will require gifted in-servicing of both teachers and administrators. • Gifted programming or providing gifted services should not be limited to participation in a gifted program. Gifted services must include enrichment and/or acceleration based on the individual strengths of the student. • The GIEP must be written to address a student’s strengths. Weaknesses or deficiencies are addressed under Chapter 14 using an IEP. Students with organization or behavior needs should have a 504.

  8. Gifted • The suggestion from state training is to include one, two, or three specific goals that come from information on the Present Level section of the GIEP. (goals - fewer and more specific) • For example: All students participating in the seminar program will be exposed to gifted instruction that includes: higher order thinking skills, creativity skills, public speaking skills, and research skills. Public speaking will benefit all students but may only be included as a goal on verbally advanced students.

  9. PAGE www.giftedpage.org The mission of PAGE is to advocate for mentally gifted children by working with parents, teachers, administrators, policy makers, and the community to meet the diverse needs of gifted learners. The Pennsylvania Association for Gifted Education is a nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to helping gifted learners, parents and educators. An affiliate of National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), since 1951, PAGE has assisted countless parents, teachers and administrators in helping Pennsylvania’s gifted learners reach their full potential. We do this through our free Helpline, our network of local affiliates, annual conferences, the resources listed below, and effective advocacy. Working with state legislators and members of the state Department of Education, PAGE fostered the passage of Pennsylvania’s Chapter 16, Special Education for the Gifted, one of the strongest for gifted education in the nation.

  23. The Line Birbal was jester, counselor, and fool to the great Moghul emperor, Akbar. The villagers loved to talk of Birbal’s wisdom and cleverness, and the emperor loved to try to outsmart him. One day Akbar, the emperor, drew a line across the floor. ______________________ “Birbal,” he ordered, “you must make this line shorter. But you cannot erase any bit of it!” Everyone present thought the emperor had finally found a way to outsmart Birbal. It was clearly an impossible task. Yet within moments the emperor and everyone present had to agree that Birbal had make the line shorter without erasing any part of it. How would this be?

  24. Answer Birbal simply drew a longer line next to the first one--- which made the first line shorter than the second. ________________________________ (Longer) ___________________ (Shorter)
