  1. Grime Scene Investigation By Lachlan & Hal

  2. Introduction On the 4th of June students from Ferncourt PS went to Sylvania Public School to celebrate World Environment Day 2008. We studied the state of the Georges River and its sea-life. The Georges River is a waterway in the state of New South Wales in Australia. It rises to the south-west of Sydney near the coal mining town of Appin, and then flows north past Campbelltown, roughly parallelling the Main South Railway. At Liverpool it then turns east and flows past suburbs such as East Hills, Lugarno, Bangor and Blakehurst, before emptying into Botany Bay at Taren Point in the southern suburbs of Sydney.   3. Plankton Study The first activity we completed was studying plankton that we caught earlier that day. The plankton we identified are called Acmaea, Thalassiosira condensuta and Foraminferan. The reason why the plankton is so important is because it starts the food chain and without plankton millions of creatures would die of starvation.

  4. Fish Dissection The fish we dissected was a species known as the Black Fish. The Black Fish is a herbivore which makes it a plant eater. First we cut the fish open with scissors and we prized the cut open. Then we poked around inside with tweezers and we found thebrain, the heart, and digestive system! We also discovered what the fish been eating! It seems it has been eating a large amount of seaweed! This was by far the best activity we did on the day. This was probably the fish we dissected.

  5. Water Quality Testing The water quality testing was one of the last things we did on the day. The water we tested was the water that came from the Georges River. We measured how much turbidity, dissolved oxygen, acidity, and phosphates were in the water. In addition we also measured the temperature.

  6. Biotic Study The biotic study was the last thing we did on the day. The biotic study included us looking at different sea creatures. After examining the creatures we were asked to identify and sketch them on a worksheet. The animals that we sketched were blue-clawed crab, king prawn and flounder.
