National Police Cadet Corps Crime Scene Investigation Unit • As the Singapore population increases, the Criminal Investigation Department is actively recruiting new investigators to combat crime. After a series of tests and interviews, you have just been accepted into the Department and appointed an Assistant Investigation Officer (AIO). You will now undergo the basic Crime Scene Investigation training module that includes: • Introduction to CSI • Establishing and developing fingerprints in a crime scene • Welcome AIO, we will now introduce to you to Crime Scene Investigation.

National Police Cadet Corps What is CSI? • A form of forensic science which supports investigation leading the authorities or the Police to the facts behind an incident (or crime scene) • Forensic science plays a vital role in criminal & civil investigation • Police Officers play an important role in the collection & preservation of forensic evidence

  6. National Police Cadet Corps Purpose & Goal • To avoid contamination & destruction of physical evidence • To maximize the collection of relevant evidence & information • With proper crime scene management, physical evidence can be preserved & collected to solve a crime

National Police Cadet Corps Approaching a Crime Scene • Consider personal safety • Take control upon arrival • Attend to injured person • Do not approach the crime scene directly • Preserve the scene • Make significant observations & take down relevant notes • Be alert & observe the whole surroundings for physical & discarded evidence

National Police Cadet Corps What is Physical Evidence? • Physical evidence is any type of materials found at a crime scene. • Physical evidence found in a crime scene can help police officers to: • Establish the nature / location of a crime. • Establish the motive of a crime. • Link a suspect to a crime scene. • Identify the person responsible for the crime. • Re-construct a crime scene. • Provide the direction for investigation.

  10. National Police Cadet Corps Types of Physical Evidence • Physical evidence found in a crime scene can be in different forms: • Weapons eg. knife, scissors, razors , firearms etc • Prints eg. fingerprints, footprints etc • Stains eg. blood, oil, sweat, saliva

National Police Cadet Corps Collection of Evidence • Collection of physical evidence can be done using several methods: • Fingerprint Dusting / Lifting • Using fingerprint dusting kits to dust for fingerprints • Police Photography • The proper technique to take photographs of a crime scene • DNA Analysis • Obtaining DNA from saliva stains left in a crime scene • Bloodstain Pattern Analysis • Analyze different blood pattern found in a crime scene

National Police Cadet Corps Fingerprint Dusting / Lifting • Fingerprints can be found when left behind in a crime by the suspects • By dusting the objects that is found in a crime scene with white or black powder using the fiber dusting brush • Fingerprints developed through the dusting can be lifted using the fingerprint lifters • Both the white & black powders together with the fiber dusting brush & fingerprint lifters are included in the CSI kits

  13. National Police Cadet Corps Police Photography • Police officers use a specific camera model to take photographs of the crime scene • A proper photography technique is use to take photographs of the crime scene

  14. National Police Cadet Corps DNA Analysis • DNA found in a crime scene can be used as evidence: • Blood splatters • Perspiration • Skin tissue found under fingernails • Saliva stains
