  1. Fahrenheit 451 Ali Ruotolo, David Fernandez, Hailey Craven, & Nate Rollins

  2. Meeting Clarisse • The book starts off with Montag walking home from his job. As a fireman, Guy Montag is responsible for destroying not only the books he finds, but also the homes in which he finds them. He comes across a girl names Clarisse who gives Montag enlightenment as she thinks very differently.

  3. Mildred’s Overdose • Once inside his house all he can think about in Clarisse but is suddenly startled to find his wife Mildred overdosed on sleeping pills. Of course Montag calls in medics who pump her stomach. After wards Montag tries to discuss the matter of the overdose but Mildred does not agree on this matter which suggests the insightful hostility that exists between them.

  4. Montag’s Books Mildred found out the Montag was hiding the books and she knew it was illegal so she called the police. When Montag came home he saw his house on fire. He see Beatty in the front yard and Beatty is taunting Montag and it causes Montag to react to Beatty. Montag set Beatty on fire. Trying to escape from all the commotion the mechanical hound stabs him.

  5. Montag’s Escape Montag collects the rest of the books that haven’t already been burned. He plants them at other firemen’s homes. He runs to Fabers house to plan out how they are going to escape. Faber tells him that there is a group of people in the woods. The people in the woods are people who help him successfully escape from his life and they encourage him to keep reading books so when they’re gone they can be the ones to tell people their stories so they will continue to live on.

  6. Symbolism • The Hearth and the Salamander- Both the heart and the salamander fire. • The Sieve and the Sand- Montag’s effort to learn as he reads. • The Phoenix- A mythological bird that bursts into flames at death and rises from the ashes born again. The phoenix represents Montag’s spiritual rebirth. • 451- The temperature at which paper burns. • Fire- Represents destruction, of books, of people, of society. • Clarisse- Clarity. Clarisse was able to see through what the society was doing. • Montag- A new beginning. He leaves the society and starts doing what he wanted to do. • Beatty- Beat/beaten. Montag kills him/beats him. • Faber- Paper supplies. Supplies Montag with a copy of the bible. • Granger- Harmony with nature. Montag met up with him outdoors by the railroad. • Mildred- Gentle strength. She was easily overcome in the book.

  7. Metaphors 1. pg. 58: A book is a loaded gun in the house next door." This compares a book to a loaded gun. That shows how many people seem to feel about books. 2. pg. 90: I'm the Queen Bee, safe in the hive. You will be the drone, the traveling ear." This is an interesting sentence because a number of metaphors are located in this one sentence. . Faber is the Queen Bee, the hive is his home, Montag is the drone, and the drone is an ear. 3. “He tried to count how many times she swallowed and he thought of the visit from the two zinc-oxide-faced men with the cigarettes in their straight-lined mouths and the electronic-eyed snake winding down into the layer upon layer of night and stone and stagnant spring water …” The metaphor not only describes the machine but creates a mood. It compares it to something many people either fear or dislike giving the impression that the machine is a bad thing. This is meant to unsettle the reader more and more.

  8. Theme • Censorship- Censorship has taken over their society. People aren’t accepted and being smart and wanting to learn about the outside is considered to be wrong. Family has been replaced by walls that are TVs.
