  2. Organs Involved in the System

  3. Functions of the Organs • The skeleton provides the framework for the body. Bones provide the basic shape and structure for the body. The bones are like the beams inside of a building, and all of our organs, muscles and skin are organized around the bones, just like the walls of a building. The mandible and maxilla support the tooth. Bones of the lower of the lower limbs, pelvis and vertebral column hold up the body.

  4. Vocabulary • Thorax the bones of the thorax (ribs, sternum and thoracic vertebrae) form a cage which protects many of the body's vital organs. The Axial skeleton This is the main body including the pelvis, thorax, and skull (excluding the arms and legs). The Proximal skeleton The femur and humerus (ie the bones proximal to the Axial skeleton) The Distal skeleton The lower legs (tibia, fibula, and feet bones) and lower arm (radius, ulna, and bones of the hand). The Proximal and Distal skeleton are sometimes collectively referred to as bones of the extremities. The spine The spine is divided into 5 main areas and each bone (verebrae) has a letter and number.

  5. Facts • The smallest bone in your body is in your ear, and is the size of a rice grain.

  6. Disease of the system • Rickets is a disorder caused by a lack of vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate. It leads to softening and weakening of the bones. • Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. Symptoms: There are no symptoms in the early stages of the disease.
