National Development Plan • Improving the quality of Basic Education has been articulated in the National Development Plan (NDP), Vision 2030,Our future – Make it work. • The Education Sector has aligned its medium-term and annual performance plans towards improving: • the nutrition of learners, • building more safe schools/improving school infrastructure in rural areas, • ensuring every child in “no-fee” schools has access to workbooks, • improving the competency and capacity of school principals to be effective leaders and • building more teacher development centres to support the improvement in teacher content knowledge and pedagogical practice. 7

Action Plan 2019 In terms of Action Plan to 2019: Towards the realisation of Schooling 2030, the output goals focussing on minimum quality standards in the Further Education and Training Band include: • Increase the number of Grade 12 learners who become eligible for a Bachelors programme at University’; • Increase the number of Grade 12 learners who pass Mathematics; and • Increase the number of Grade 12 learners who pass Physical Science 8

NSC Examination • National Senior Certificate examination results is one of the most important barometers to evaluate the success of the sector. • Progress in the sector has noted in the recent cycles of international and regional assessment programmes. • TIMSS (2015) has confirmed that South Africa has shown the largest improvement since 2003 – 87 points in Maths and 90 points in Science 9

Profile: Class of 2016 • Ninth (9th) cohort of learners to sit for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) and third (3rd) cohort to write CAPS aligned NSC Examinations. • The 2016 cohort has benefited from maturity of the system garnered over the last seven years. • Learners entered the formal schooling system in January 2005, just after an important curriculum revision was implemented. • Internal Efficiency of the School System Report (2013) indicates that already in 2002, 40% of five-year-olds were enrolled at an educational institution. • Given the Age Admission Policy, the majority of these five-year-olds could have been enrolled in the reception year (Grade R). 11
