Section 1 Describing and measuring motion • Motion: an object is in motion if its distance from another object is changing. • In relation to the ground you are standing on you may not be moving. • In reality the Earth is moving through space very fast. While you stand still you are actually moving about 30 kilometers every second through space. (this is about 66,960 miles per hour)
Reference Point: A place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion. • In the last example the ground was used as a reference point and space was used as the other reference point. • We are not moving in reference to the ground but we are moving in reference to space.
Speed: a measure of the rate some thing is moving. The rate is the distance an object moves in a certain amount of time. • For example if you are traveling 95 miles per hour in your car. You will travel a distance of 95 miles in the time of one hour. • Speed = distance time Constant speed: The rate never changes. You always travel 95 miles per hour the entire trip.
Average speed: The total distance divided by the total time. You may have had a stop light along the way brining the total average down to 85 miles per hour even though while you were driving you maintained 95 miles per hour. • Velocity: Speed in a given direction • For example: you were traveling 95 miles per hour to the hospital is a velocity
