This guide presents essential resources for the implementation of the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) in Virginia. It includes technical assistance documents, Z-tables for Algebra II, and modules for Algebra I. The revised format offers differentiation strategies for diverse learners, with new formula sheets and enhanced rigor, set to take effect in the 2011-2012 school year. Additional resources include practice opportunities through ePATs and updates on the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

Math Resources for SOL • Statistics Component: Technical Assistance Documents for A.9 and AII.11 (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/mathematics/high/index.shtml) http://tinyurl.com/3y4ebmm • Z-tables for Algebra II (only use these): (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/test_administration/ancilliary_materials/2011-12/index.shtml) http://tinyurl.com/3axsscs • Modules for Algebra I (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/mathematics/high/index.shtml) http://tinyurl.com/3y4ebmm • New Formula Sheets: (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/test_administration/ancilliary_materials/2011-12/index.shtml) http://tinyurl.com/3axsscs
Enhanced Scope and Sequence • Revised and redeveloped • New layout • Provides differentiation strategies for all types of learners • Anticipated by Summer 2011
Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching • 2011 awards will honor math and science teachers working in grades 7-12 • Nominations due April 1, 2011 • Applications due May 2, 2011 • www.paemst.org • Supt.’s Memo #254-10 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics & Science Teaching (PAEMST) Program
New SOL Assessments • “Revised” versus “new” • Increased rigor • Technology enhanced items • Higher-level questions
Blueprints and Curriculum • Blueprints are currently available on the VDOE website to accommodate curriculum development and instructional planning, but will not become effective until the 2011-2012 school year • School divisions should be teaching the new content from the 2009 SOL in the 2010-2011 school year since there will be FT items in spring 2011 on the new content
New SOL Blueprints Look for changes in: • Number of reporting categories • Number of items in reporting categories • Asterisks denoting SOL that will be assessed in the non-calculator section for grades 4 - 7 • SOL that will not be tested
Formula Sheets • Formula sheets that correspond to the 2009 Standards for grades 6-8 and EOC are currently available on the VDOE2011-2012 Ancillary Test Materials webpage http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/test_administration/ancilliary_materials/2011-12/index.shtml
Practice Opportunities for Students • Approximately ten practice questions will be provided via an ePAT for each mathematics test, Grades 3-8 and EOC • ePATs will include items that address increased rigor for existing SOL, items that address new SOL, and technology enhanced items • Available by February, 2011
Technology Enhanced Items Format of Questions: Fill in the blank Click and drag Hot-spots: Select one or more answer options, placing points on coordinate planes Creation of graphs
