  5. History of Heroin • 3400 B.C. – opium poppies grown in Mesopotamia • 1800s – opium dens common in Asia • Late 1800s – heroin synthesized from opium poppy, sold as “non-addictive” cough medicine • Present – used along with morphine for medical treatment of pain

Harms of Heroin • Heroin is extremely addictive and extremely harmful • Many users inject heroin directly into their veins • Sharing needles leads to infection and transmission of bloodborne diseases such as hepatitis and HIV • Heroin withdrawal is severe • Cold sweats, depression, sleeping difficulties, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  8. Reducing the Harm of Heroin • Methadone treatment programs • Methadone is a safer, less addictive substitute for heroin • Governments supply clean needles to users • Medically trained staff supervise heroin use at safe injection sites
