  3. Let’s look at the rules of past tense

  4. Simple Past (use) • Completed action in the past 2. A series of completed axns. 3. Duration in the past • I saw a movie yesterday. • He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00. • I lived in Spain for 2 years.

  5. Simple Past 4. Habits in the past 5. Past facts or generalizations • I studied French when I was in high school. • He didn’t like tomatoes before.

  6. Grammatical structure • Past tense is usually used with the following time expressions: • Yesterday • last week/ weekend / month/ year • Positive • Subject + Past Tense + object(s) + time Expression • Examples: • Tim went to the supermarket yesterday. • Sally played tennis last weekend. • We were in the library last night.

  7. Grammatical structure • Negative • Subject + did + not (didn't) + verb + object(s) + time Expression • We didn’t play soccer yesterday. • They didn’t go to school last week. • He didn’t do his homework last night. • You don’t always have to use a time expression.

  13. When and While • When + simple past • I was watching TV when she called. • While + past continuous • While I was watching TV, she called.

  15. Past Continuous (Use) 2. Specific Time as an Interruption • Example: Last night at 7pm I was playing computer games. • At midnight we were still drinking at the festival.
