Objectives of the study • To find out what stimulates interest among women for pursuing their higher education. • To identify the education programs most attractive to women. • To determine the opportunities and effect of Community College on the educational and socio-economic attainment of women. • To identify the different challenges women face as students.

University of Sharjah Community College • Established 2005 • Programs of study. • It grew out of the initiatives and vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi with the specific objective to reinforce the social role and responsibilities of UOS and better serve the community. • Female Vs Male

  6. Related work Most of our findings are supported by: • Madsen (2009), Gerson (1985) • Forrest (1981), Maki et al. (1974) • Musil (2009 • Home (1997), • Zosky et al., 2004 • Our results showed that similar reasons and similar problems to this cited literature.

  7. Research methodology • Data collection: a five-point Likert scale questionnaire was designed based on the previous literature. To validate it, it was reviewed by two faculty members and pilot tested on eight female students then finalized • A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed: • 110 (73.33%) were retuned • 10 were considered unusable • 100 (64.24%) are subjected to analysis using descriptive statistics using Parts: • Demographic information • Reasons for pursuing higher education • Problems/challenges they faced

  8. Findings Demographics: • (52 %) aged 18-24 years • (42%) are married , 87% have one to five children • 99% locals • 55% are unemployed • (58%) enrolled in Business Administration • (11 %) are in Library and Information Systems.

Conclusion • Our findings revealed similar results to the cited literature since 1970s till 2009 • Women in CC UAE expressed same reasons that other students (Europe, North America) had expressed. • Also they face the same problems and challenges that their counterparts face as shown in the cited literature. • Big shortage of the studies on Community College education specially in recent years. • Only two studies in UAE (1980s) were proposing CC education.

Recommendations • Conduct more studies about CC education in UAE as its needed to prepare middle management and technical staff. • Offer more programs that are specifically geared to women’s interest. (Media Studies, PR, women studies) • Offer facilities for women to concentrate on their studies like (nursery, clinic, family counseling..)
