  1. Bellringer9/19/18 Dividers up & log in to GOFORMATIVE! Have a sheet of paper labeled with name & date This Bellringer is a Quiz of Negative Exponent Rule 15 Mins to complete • Hustle!

  2. Agenda 9/19/18 • Discovering what is Scientific Notation Video/ Notes • SciNot to Standard Form • Standard Form to SciNot • Calculating with numbers in SciNot (using a calculator) • Quizizz to Practice 8.EE.A.3 Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities and to express how many times as much one is than the other. 8.EE.A.4 Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used.

  3. Scientific Notation Math’s Shorthand or text speak http://www.shmoop.com/video/scientific-notation

  4. Scientific Notation Chop the number so that it’s between 1 and 10. (that’s your coefficient) Count the number of spaces until you get to the end of the number-presto that’s the exponent! It’s always a number times a power of 10.

  5. Ex 1 Scientific Notation to Standard form 5.34 Why did we only need two zeros while the exponent was 4? ?

  6. NEGATIVE POWERS MEAN DIVISION = = 0.1 If you have a negative exponent it will be a very small number.

  7. Ex 2 Scientific Notation to Standard form 3.27 ?

  8. Ex 3 Standard form to Scientific Notation 0.000000467 Is this number greater than or less than 1? LESS! So the exponent is negative, we are dividing by a power of ten!

  9. Ex 3 Standard form to Scientific Notation 0.000000467

  10. Ex 4 Standard form to Scientific Notation Will the exponent be positive or negative? 3,725,000 ?

  11. Can we see reasons why is it helpful to write numbers in different ways?

  12. Practice Writing Numbers in Scientific Notation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHGpopA7o3c&safe=active

  13. Team Effort Sci Not to Standard form B. c. A.

  14. Team Effort Sci Not to Standard form Common Error Don’t let a negative exponent make you think the number is negative! B. c. A.

  15. Using the Calculator to Work with numbers in Scientific Notation USE PARENTHESES! Your calculator isn’t psychic. (first number in scinot) + (second number in scinot) Let’s try a couple together on the calculator:

  16. Adding or Subtracting with Scientific Notation 8.9042 x 9.5871 x 1.233 x 6.854 x

  17. Multiplying or Dividing with Scientific Notation Gathering scientific no8.19 x Gathering scientific no6.3 x Gathering scientific no2.375 x Gathering scientific no3.75 x

  18. POOLE 2nd

  19. POOLE 3rd

  20. Miles Practice Go to quizizz.com

  21. AfterQuizizz Work on IXL exponents

  22. Reflection Only do standard to sci and vice-versa.  don't show computations.  Focus on changing between forms-first quizizz only. Exponent quiz was awful. I went over the quiz-15 mins. Format needs to be vertical. Text talk:  abbreviations Mister, etc. Talk about careers besides money, biology
