  1. Before You Begin “The School Mapping Project” • Make sure you have all of your: • equipment c. data • software d. tutorials The next pages list and describe the items you will need to be able to complete your project.

  2. Equipment GPS receiver, support module, and/or cables for one of the following: • Trimble • GeoExplorer 3 Trimble GeoXM Trimble Recon Trimble GeoExplorer II Connect your cables to the computer as described in your Trimble manual. Can’t find your manual? Download one from http://www.trimble.com/support.html

  3. Software The computer you will use should have the following applications installed on the C: drive 1. GPS software: Trimble Pathfinder Office 2. GIS software: ESRI ArcGIS 9.0 or Intergraph Geomedia Professional (5.0, 5.1, or 5.2)

  4. Data • You will need to download the data packet for your school. • Go to http://outreach.cast.uark.edu/east/schoolmappingproject/dataand find the file for your school. These are self-executing “zip” files, and have a .exe extension. These self-executing zip files consist of compressed projects and their associated data. This data will extract to predetermined locations that will facilitate opening the project file. • Right-click on the file and choose “Save target as…”, saving it to a location that you have permission to and will be able to find again. • Open the file, and click the “Install” button without changing anything else. You may need administrator privileges to do this. You have to unzip the file before you can access any of your data. Note for GeoMedia users: If GeoMedia is not installed on the computer you’re using, two new folders, “GeoWorkspaces” and “Warehouses” will be created directly under your C: drive. Your data and project files will be extracted into these folders.

  5. Tutorials • You’re now ready to start your School Mapping Project. • Download the presentation for Chapter 1, and get started! • If you run into problems, please post questions on the School Mapping Forum by going to the EAST Project page http://www.eastproject.org and selecting the link Forums, then Student Forum, GIS/GPS, and then School Mapping Project.
