Accurate Height Measurement Methods Comparison

The study carries out indirect measurements to determine the height of a tree. Three different methods are used: trigonometry, 30-60-90 triangles, and similar triangles. The results are compared, and the most accurate method is suggested based on the findings.

  1. Indirect Measurements By:Emilee Durbin, Alena Gonzales, Ashley Scott, Andrea Zapata

  2. *Measured Emilee eye level to the ground (64in)

  3. *Emilee’s angle of elevation is 60 degrees *depression 30 degrees

  4. Trigonometry tan(49)= x x=1.2(185)=207 *height of tree= 271 in. 185

  5. 30-60-90 Triangles *hypotenuse is 182 inches because the short leg is 92 inches *912+AB2=1822 *8,281+AB2=22,124 *AB2=24,823 *AB=157.6 *height of tree= 221in

  6. Similar Triangles X/720=64/180 180x=720(64)180x=46,080 x=256 height of tree is 256 feet

  7. Compare - Andrea got an answer of x= 207 feet using trig - Alena got an answer of x= 221 feet using 30-60-90 - Ashley got an answer of x= 256 feet using similar triangles

  8. Comparison -The height we got using trig is off because it is the farthest answer from the other two methods. -We think the most accurate is the 30-60-90 because it is the simplest way to do the problem. -The answer for similar triangles makes more sense because we had to measure the shadow for it.
