  2. Index • Glossary • IEEE802.3af standard • RMA/support procedure

  3. Glossary • IEEE802.3af – IEEE standard for PoL • PD – Powered Device. A terminal Device, which has been designed to recieve power and data in a single cat5 cable • Conventional Ethernet Switch – 10/100 switch without In-line power • Mid span device – Takes data from Conventional Ethernet Switch and insert power into the spare pairs of a single cat5 cable. Installed between the Ethernet switch and the PD

  4. Glossary cont. • End span device – Ethernet switches incorporating In-line power • PSE – Powered Sourcing Equipment (same as End Span Device) • Physical Infrastucture – The CAT5 cabling, patch panel, connectors, etc

  5. IEEE802.3af standard • IEEE802.3af is IEEE802.3 Subcommitee • PowerDsine is a founding member of IEE802.3af • Technical verison 4.0 of the standard is complete • Purpose is to provide intelligent, reliable and safe power over physical infrastructure for legacy and new PD’s • Standard estimated to be closed Q1 of 2003

  6. IEEE802.3af standard cont. • Parts of Main Decisions Summary • PSE output: 350mA continuous, 44Vdc to 57Vdc • PSE continuous Average Output Power: 15.4W minimum • PD maximum power allowed to be used is 12.95W • Mid-span shall supply power on spare pairs (4,5 and 7,8) • End-span shall supply power on either data pairs (1,2 & 3,6) or spare pairs (4,5 & 7,8). • Power cannot be applied to any PD unless the proper signature (the resistor concept) is detected. (This is how non PD’s are protected)

  7. RMA/support procedure • RMA procedure is the same as with Axis products • Always contact Kettil regarding support questions and escalations • Information about the installation and use of the unit • Information about the failure and/or reason for not working
