2. Outline For This Evening: • Mrs. Jennifer Campbell - Grade 12 Counsellor: Post-Secondary Preparations and Other Options. (15 minutes) • Mrs. Heather Gunn – Teacher at MHS: Your Next Step - Tips to Choosing a College or University / Career Path. (15 minutes) • Mr. Chris West – Teacher and Grad Class Coordinator: An Overview of Grad Year (15 minutes) • Yearbook (5 minutes) • Q & A (10 minutes) *This PowerPoint will be available on www.monctonhighgrads.ca

3. Semester 1Research & Preparation • University & College Fair (AARAO Fair) is on Monday, Oct. 7th 9am-8pm & Tuesday the 8th 9am-3pm at the Moncton Coliseum – Agrena A. Parents’ evening will be on October 7thfrom 6-8pm.https://aarao.ca/ Students should go into this event with a PLAN – What do you want to know? • Program Info? Admissions requirements? When to apply? Do your research prior to attending the fair. • myBlueprintis a great resource to have students prepare for this event. Go to AESD landing page  www.myblueprint.ca/anglophoneeast  to register. Choose the "signup" option at the top. It will take you through a series of drop-down information to set up your account. Students can also download the app: "myBlueprint Class Pass” to have on their device. * You will need to have your student number and email. School email is: first 3 letters of first name + first three letters of last name + last 5 digits of student # @ nbss.nbed.nb.ca Ex. Jencam00123@nbss.nbed.nb.ca

4. Post Secondary Visits Independent visits at MHS from recruiters who provide detailed information, answer specific questions, give away swag and offer admissions on the spot. Refer to the calendar outside of the Guidance Office and listen to the announcements for sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in the Guidance Office. Upcoming Visits • Acadia University – Thursday, September 26th • St. Thomas University – Tuesday, October 1st • Saint Mary’s University – Tuesday, October 15th • NBCC – Tuesday, October 29th *Other great opportunities are to attend Open Houses &“Student For A Day” programs offered at post-secondary institutions.

5. The LORAN Scholarship Are you dedicated to serving others, show promise of leadership and have integrity, courage, compassion, grit and a high level of personal autonomy? Required: 85% average/Canadian citizen or permanent resident/full-time studies. Application Details: • Grade 12 students may now apply at: apply.loranscholar.ca • Submit a transcript, request a reference from a teacher or community member and have your school sponsorship confirmed before the deadline. • To Receive Sponsorship: Pick up in-house sponsorship form from Mrs. Campbell due by Friday, October 4th • Deadline:October 17th at 8:00pm (Eastern Time). Each high school may sponsor up to 3 students. Others apply in direct pool by October 24th at 8:00pm.

6. Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship Criteria: • Grade 12 planning to attend a post-secondary institution. • Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities. • Display perseverance and integrity in overcoming adversity. • Demonstrate critical financial need ($65,000 or less annual net income per family is required). • Maintain a minimum 65% average. • Be a Canadian citizen. 7. The SCHULICH Scholarship Are you going to university to study Science, Technology, Engineering or Math? To Qualify: • Graduating Canadian citizen/permanent resident • Studying at a SHULICH partner university • Demonstrate academic excellence (e.g. average over 90%) To Apply: • High school scholarships committee selects 1 student to be their Schulich Leader Nominee (speak to your previous math/science teachers for recommendation) • Nominee completes a separate Schulich Leader application • Universities review applications and select their scholarship recipients • Visit the website: http://www.schulichleaders.com/

8. Application Details: Please pass in the following to Mrs. Campbell by Monday, November 18th: • Universities and the desired programs where you plan to apply/attend (remember to ensure they are Schulich partner universities). Write a sentence or two for each of your desired universities and programs (e.g. why do they interest you?) • List and describe (2-3 sentences) your top three achievements (academic or other). • Write a 250 word essay demonstrating why you would make a great Schulich Leader (if you are selected, a 600 word essay is required by the Schulich Foundation). • Write a 250 word essay to outline any extenuating circumstances of which the scholarship committee should be aware (e.g. financial, personal, academic, etc.). • Short answer to identify where you see yourself in 10 years. • Provide two letters of reference (at least one from a school staff member) – please use request for reference form. *Additional – transcripts/headshot profile for publicity if selected.

9. Semester 2Action & Decisions • Applying to PSE: • Application form (online or hardcopy) • Fee ($50 – 100) • Transcript – fill out form at office • College – rolling admissions means you can apply anytime (sooner is better than later) • University–apply by end of February in order to be considered for admission awards – some schools have a separate application for entrance scholarships • 80% - $500+ • 85+% - $1000+ • 90+% - $1500+ • Universities will contact you with admission decision and bursary offer by the end of March.

10. Have you and your parents discussed organizing your finances for PSE? Examples of annual costs: • College private tuition $10,000+ (Outlon, Eastern College) • College public tuition $3500 (NBCC, NSCC, Holland College) • University $16,000+ (tuition & residence) Where will the money come from? • savings & earnings • parents • money from scholarship & bursaries • student loans (government) • student line of credit (bank)

11. When to apply for scholarships? Getting ready to apply for scholarships, have you … • Requested Reference letters?
