  1. Advertising Sahil and Anik are watching Saturday morning TV. An advert for sweets comes on that makes then laugh and they decide they really want some right now. Anik gets some money from the kitchen drawer and they go to the corner shop. 1 What do you think Sahil and Anik will buy at the shop? 2 What do you think about them taking the money? 3 How do you think their parents might react? 4 What do you feel when you see adverts for sweets? 5 Are there other things you like or want that are advertised on TV? 6 How do adverts work to make you buy things?

  2. Valuing things Paula has just been into her brother’s room and broken one of his super-hero models that he collects. He loves his collection and will miss the model. Paula is good friends with her brother but is too scared to own up as she knows she should have been more careful. 1 What do you think Paula will do? 2 How do you think her brother will feel when he finds out? 3 What do you think he might say? 4 How does this scenario make you feel? 5 What would you do in this situation?

  3. Stealing? Patrick and Stefan are friends in Year 2. Stefan has a wonderful new watch that Patrick loves. He sees Stefan put it in his coat pocket for safety while he goes out to play. Patrick wants it so badly he takes it and hides it in his lunch box.   4. Stealing Rufus and Spike are in the newsagent looking at some comics.   5. Balancing life and work Jenny’s parents are divorced and she lives with her mum. Her mum has a very good job but she has to work long hours and comes home so exhausted that she cannot give Jenny any of her time. They used to have lots of fun together before the divorce when Jenny’s mum didn’t work so hard – nowadays Jenny has lots of expensive things but is very lonely at home. 1 What is happening in this scenario? 2 How is Jenny feeling? 3 How is her mum feeling? 4 What could happen next? 5 What advice would you give Jenny? 6 What advice would you give Jenny’s mum?

  6. Saving, spending and lending Anik likes to save his pocket money. He likes to plan how he will spend it when he gets a lot. Ranjit, his older brother, likes to spend his money as soon as he gets it and has asked Anik to lend him some as he has run out. Anik has said no and this has caused bad feeling between them.   7. Saving and lending Petra has saved quite a lot of money from presents and doing odd jobs. The family car is old and has broken down and needs a new part to fix it. Petra knows her parents need the car and do not have the cash to get it mended.   8. Wasting time Hal has lots of friends but is often bored at school. He is much happier helping his parents look after their small but very busy shop. He has plenty of responsibility and knows he is a great help and looks forward to when he is old enough to serve the customers.
