  2. Dictionary meaning • Oxford Dictionary defines “Labour are those who are doing physical hard work for their lives”. • Oxford Dictionary defines “ Welfare is the health, happiness and fortunes of a employee”. • Financial support given for this purpose.

  3. Need & Importance • Industrial progress of a country depends on its committed labour force. • In this regard the importance of labour welfare was recognized as early as 1931. • Royal commission on labor in its report “ the schemes of labor welfare may be regarded as “ a wise investment”. • Which should usually does bring a profitable return in the form of greater efficiency.

  4. Later on “Planning commission” realized the importance of labor welfare – in its report • “ in order to get the best out of a worker in the matter of production, working conditions require to be improved to a large extent”.

  5. Concept • An abstract idea of a specific area is known as concept. in this connection here I have given the different ideas of labour welfare.

  6. Labor investigation committee • Anything done for the intellectual, physical, moral and economic betterment of the workers. Whether by employers, by government or by other agencies.

  7. ILO • Such services, facilities and amenities as may be established in or in the vicinity (surrounding area) of undertakings to enable the persons employed in them to perform their work in health, and high morale.

  8. Encyclopedia of social sciences • The voluntary efforts of the employers to establish, within the existing industrial system, working and sometimes, living and cultural conditions of the employees beyond what is required by law, the custom of the country and the conditions of the market.

Welfare Within the Establishment • Latrines and urinals • Washing and bathing facilities • Creches • Rest shelters and canteens • Arrangements for drinking water • Health services, including occupational safety • Arrangements for prevention of fatigue • Administrative arrangements for the welfare of employees • Uniform and protective clothings • Shift allowance.

Welfare outside the Establishment • Maternity benefits • Social insurance measures(gratuity, pension, PF) • Benevolent funds • Medical facilities • Educational facilities • Housing facilities • Recreation facilities( sports, cultural activities, library, reading rooms) • Holiday homes and leave travel facilities • Workers cooperative stores , and societies • Transport to and from the place of work

Objectives - to enable the workers to enjoy a fuller and richer life. - to improve the efficiency of the worker. - to develop a sense of responsibilities and dignity among the workers and thus makes them worthy citizens of the nation. - to clear the disparity between the employees - to clear individual and family problems of a employees - to ensure his health conditions • to help the employee for his personal growth
