  3. ENCompass system • Core software for K-State Digital Library • Metadata manager • KSU is a software development partner along with– • Cornell University • Getty Research Institute • University of Pennsylvania

  4. ENCompass evolution • ENCompass 1.0 – metadata management system for original local content • ENCompass 2.0 – federated searching and linking for access to commercial resources • ENCompass 3.0 – user authentication, personalized search tools

  5. ENCompass serves two functions for KSU’s Digital Library • To build/manage KSU’s digital collections • To manage access to and linking between KSU’s e-resources

Developing local contentVarying content, conversion, workflows • Grain Elevator Explosion images • Digital objects (.jpg/.tif) created by DLD • Metadata by Professor Schoeff and DLD • Converted from MS ACCESS to DC XML • Kansas Wildflowers images • Images (.jpg) already on website host server • DC metadata created directly in ENCompass • KSU Research and Extension Publications • Objects (.pdf) already on Extension web site • Metadata by publication authors • Kansas Weather Data • Text and images • Digitizing was outsourced (funded by KDL grant)

  10. User Interface development • XML/XSL-based displays allow great flexibility for local customization • It’s a good thing, too • Power of federated search capability needs to be harnessed • Zentropy Partners consulting on interface design

  14. Development time frame for 2003 • April-May: Integrate ENCompass access rights management with K-State LDAP • June-July: Zentropy Partners’ Custom User Interface completed • Fall: implement ENCompass 3.5 (Fast search engine, Virage gateway)
