  4. Today • Review all the parts of a strong academic paragraph • Start Rhetorical Patterns: • Process • Narrative • MAKE UP SESSION RIGHT AFTER THIS IN ROOM 5

  5. Academic Paragraphs • Indented • Topic Sentence with Controlling Idea • Supporting Sentences that support the controlling idea. • A conclusion sentence that brings an ending to the paragraph and shows NO MORE supporting ideas will be given.

  6. Other Important Elements • Capitalization • The first letter in the first word of EVERY sentence is capitalized • Punctuation • Each sentence ends with the correct form of punctuation (period, exclamation point, etc.) • Correct grammar (subject verb agreement, word forms, clause structure etc.)

  10. Math Magic Trick • For Example • 2 • Double it = 4 • Add 6= 10 • Half it =5 • Take away the number you started with (2) • Your answer should be=3

  11. Example Process Paragraph • Topic Sentence: • You can impress your friends if you follow the steps for this fun math trick. • Supporting Sentences are the ‘STEPS’ in the process. BE SURE TO USE TRANSITIONS! • First, choose any number. You can choose a simple or complex number. • Next, double that number. For example, if you choose the number two, you would then make it four.

  25. Practice with Narrative • Watch the video to get an idea of the story. • Rewatch and take notes about what happens • What is the background info? • What happens first, in the middle of the story, at the end? • What was the purpose of the story?

  26. Homework • OPTIONAL: • Write a process paragraph that describes how to make your favorite food. • OR • Write a narrative paragraph that tells the story of something that made you very, very happy.
