Situation variables • Time – Do you have enough time to engage in two way communication ?? • Information- Do you have necessary information to communicate the message or make a decision? • Acceptance- Will the other party accept your message without any input? • Capability – characterized by ability and motivation • Ability – Does the other party have the necessary knowledge or experience to participate in two way communication? • Motivation- Does the other party want to participate?

  10. Behavioral dimensions • Two dimensions Task………………………………………….People • Are you focused on getting the task done right with not much importance on relationships? or are you focused on building and strengthening relationships more than getting the job done or are you in between???

Communication styles • Autocratic – • high task - low relationship • Initiate and control with minimal response • Present message expecting compliance but very little elicitation • Closed presentation, no consideration with receivers input • Consultative – • High task-high relationship • Initiate message expecting some response • Present message and check understanding by elicitation • Closed to having message accepted but open to receivers feelings about it.

Passive role. • Elicitation with little presentation • Open communication • Empowerment – • low task-low relationship • Only response with little initiation • Present information the other party asks for • Open and you will accept the other party’s message.
