  2. Symbolism • The Iron Ring- is a symbol of the debt all of the characters have to one another during their journey. • “set a ring of black iron on his finger…” “Your life is my property.” page.14

  3. Simile • Although the thief was good at what he was doing, he was young and inexperienced and made stupid mistakes. • “He was, as I told you, a mere beginner.” page.134

  4. Metaphor • Hashkat says that Garuda greatly resembles a vulture because his feathers are so disheveled and dirty that you don’t realize that he’s actually an eagle. • “go roost with your fellow vultures.” page.65

  5. Overstatement • Tamar makes it pretty well known that he thinks that Mirri is more beautiful than any queen, well, ever, which I seriously doubt. • “A dark-hued grace like no queen had ever seen. What realm is this, so blessed with such a queen?” page.39

  6. Onomatopoeia • When Tamar and his friends first meet Garuda he is very suspicious of all the “coincidences” that have occurred between them. • “Aha!” cried Garuda.” page.65

  7. Understatement • When Rajaswami accidentally falls into a pit where Soma-Nandi, the starving she-tiger, tries to eat him. While he’s dangling from a tree root he remains a little to optimistic. • “I’m perfectly fine- as long as she can’t get at me.” page.139
