  1. Human Body

  2. Human Body Quiz! • The bones make up what system? • How many bones are in the human body? • Without our bones, our body would not have ________. • The skeletal system _______our internal organs. • The bones gives _________a place to attach. • Which minerals help bones get strong? • The center of a bone contains ________. • Which bone protects your brain? • Which bones protect your spinal cord?

  3. THE skeletal system • Your skeleton has five major functions. It provides • shape • support • enables you to move • protects your internal organs • produces blood cells • stores certain materials until your body needs them.

  4. Skeletal system • Bones are so strong that they can absorb more force without breakingthan certain types of rocks. • The spaces in bone contain a soft connective tissue called marrow there are two types of narrow, red and yellow. • The bone has four layers: the compact bone, outer membrane, spongy bone and bone narrow. • Blood vessels and nerves enter and leave the bone through the membrane.

  5. Parts of the Skeletal SysTem • The skeleton has two main parts: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. • The axial skeleton consists of the skull, the spine, the ribs and the sternum (breastbone) and includes 80 bones. • The appendicular skeleton includes two limb girdles (the shoulders and pelvis) and their attached limb bones. This part of the skeletal system contains 126 bones, 64 in the shoulders and upper limbs and 62 in the pelvis and lower limbs.

  6. Skeletal system • There are only minor differences between the skeletons of the male and the female: • men's bones tend to be larger and heavier than corresponding women's bones • the women's pelvic cavity is wider to accommodate childbirth.

  7. Structure of the human bone • A fully developed bone is made up of mineral salts, water and tissue. • There are two types of bone - compact and cancellate. • A compact bone is smooth and solid • a cancellate bone is a much lighter structure. The structure of the cancellate bone is similar to a honeycomb. • All bones are a combination of cancellate and compact bone.

  8. Skeletal system-bone • Inside each bone is a jelly like substance. This is called bone marrow and is at the center of the bone. This marrow produces blood cells for the body. Blood vessels run through the center of the bone so that the bone receives food, oxygen and minerals. • Bone is one of the strongest materials. Bones are much lighter than steel or concrete, but weight for weight, they are much stronger.

  9. Skeletal System facts! • The human hand has 27 bones; your face has 14! • The longest bone in your body? Your thigh bone, the femur -- it's about 1/4 of your height. The smallest is the stirrup bone in the ear which can measure 1/10 of an inch. • Did you know that humans and giraffes have the same number of bones in their necks? Giraffe neck vertebrae are just much, much longer! • You have over 230 moveable and semi-moveable joints in your body.
