US Forest ServiceA New Century of Caring for the Land and Serving People 2007: 155 National Forests and Grasslands covering 193 million acres 1905: 60 Forest Reserves covering 56 million acres “To provide the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people in the long run.” – Gifford Pinchot, 1st Chief “..Healthy forests …multiple sustainable use…” Gail Kimbell 16th Chief http://www.fs.fed.us

  4. There was a very good meeting in Baltimore... And then… The Geospatial Executive Board (GEB) and Geospatial Advisory Committee (GAC) were established

  5. Geospatial Executive Board (GEB)Responsibilities • Articulate a corporate vision for an enterprise-wide geospatial environment • Provide oversight and coordination of geospatial programs and activities • Ensure geospatial policies and programs are integrated, and are responsive to business needs • Act on recommendations from the Geospatial Advisory Committee

  6. Geospatial Advisory Committee (GAC)Responsibilities • Identify, monitor, and address issues regarding the state of geospatial programs and activities • Develop and make recommendations concerning geospatial program execution, and resources needed to meet agency requirements • Communicate observations, findings, and recommendations to agency geospatial community and others

  7. Geospatial Advisory Committee (GAC) Focus Areas: • Geospatial Strategy • Technology Architecture Coordination • Standardized Geospatial Data • Coordinate and Share Standardized Data • Coordination of FS Natural Resource Applications (FSNRA) • Mapping Requirements, Generation and Delivery • Geospatial Training and Awareness

  8. GAC Focus Areas • Geospatial Strategy • Technology Architecture Coordination • Standardized Geospatial Data • Coordinate and Share Standardized Data • Coordination of FS Natural Resource Applications (FSNRA) • Mapping Requirements, Generation and Delivery • Geospatial Training and Awareness

  20. GAC Focus Areas • Geospatial Strategy • Technology Architecture Coordination • Standardized Geospatial Data • Coordinate and Share Standardized Data • Coordination of FS Natural Resource Applications (FSNRA) • Mapping Requirements, Generation and Delivery • Geospatial Training and Awareness

  21. GAC Focus Area Standardized Geospatial Data Presented by: Andy Peavy

  22. GIS Data DictionaryUpdate Project

  23. Data Dictionary • 2004 update is current version • Coverage model • Oracle views • Word Documents and PDF files

  24. Data Dictionary • Our contract with ourselves for data standards • Attribute standards and domain value standards widely referenced • Adherence to data standard is a safe bet

  25. Project Objective #1 • Update the Current GIS Data Dictionary for I-Web and NRIS supported themes: • geodatabase designs • new or changed attributes • Document the transactional and published versions

  26. Activities Cultural (heritage) Recreation RMU Transportation Water Wildlife TEUI Soils Vegetations units Geology Air Range Vegetation Themes:

  27. Project Objective #2 • Create a Data Dictionary database management tool to facilitate future updates • XML database integrated with ArcCatalog FGDC metadata engine

  28. Metadata Templates • Long-time GAC objective • Template production is integrated with Data Dictionary/Metadata production

  29. Review process • Change request form generated by stewards or technical update coordinators • Publish HTML version of data dictionary detail pages • Create and distribute sample personal geodatabase • Traditional 45-day review and comment period

  30. Results • Web publication • Searchable XML • Composite FS Attribute list

  31. GAC Focus Areas • Geospatial Strategy • Technology Architecture Coordination • Standardized Geospatial Data • Coordinate and Share Standardized Data • Coordination of FS Natural Resource Applications (FSNRA) • Mapping Requirements, Generation and Delivery • Geospatial Training and Awareness

  32. GAC Focus Area Coordinate and Share Standardized Data Presented by: Dave George

  33. Recent Activity • ESRI Image Server update • FS Geodata Clearinghouse new features • Virtual Globe review

  34. ESRI Image Server Launched in October 2006 • Three distinct services: • FS intranet – through ArcMAP client, v9.1 & v9.2 • I-Web and National Apps access through Citrix • ArcServer, providing Image Server access for Web Map Services (WMS), ArcIMS and HTML web services • Development for additional Image Server access: • NIFC and the WFDSS application • MODIS Active Fire Map, internet ArcIMS access • FIA and FHTET enhanced access needs • ArcGIS Explorer (3D Globe viewing)

  35. ESRI Image Server Current Services Published • Imagery: • BOTUS – 1 meter color (Continental US) • eSAT – 15 meter color (Continental US and Alaska) • MODIS – Blue Marble – 1 kilometer (North America) • Various 1 meter imagery datasets (by request) • Ottawa NF CIR • Alaska imagery TBD • Maps: Continental US only at this time • 1:24k, 1:100k, and 1:250k eTOPO (old DRG’s) • All current Softcopy produced by GSTC • All current Secondary Base Series produced by GSTC • Terrain: • 200, 90, 30, and 10 meter Shaded Relief (Continental US) • 30 and 10 meter Aspect (Continental US) • 60 meter Shaded Relief (Alaska)

  36. ESRI Image Server Statistics • Servers have been in operation for six months, 24/7 access • 1 hour down time each weekend on off hours • Only 15 minutes of down time during business hours over the last 6 months • Image Server client access: (rounded numbers) • Average 1,600 client connections per day (business days) • Each client connection zooms or pans an average of 16 times • Each zoom or pan averages 350 KB / image • Average daily output across the network – 25,600 compressed images /day or 8.96 GB’s • Total business days in operation – 126, so 3,225,600 compressed images delivered to date, or 1.13 TB’s

  37. Website Redesign FS Geodata Clearinghouse Provides better organization, flexibility to add more types of data
