Islam in Africa • In 7th century, during caliphate of Abu Bakr, Arab forces went into West in North Africa and conquered Alexandra. • During the time of Ummayads they marched West and conquered northern coast of Africa • This includes lands now in Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. • See page 13 source1.22

Islam in the far east • Caliph Uthman, sent a Muslim mission to china. • Islam also traveled to china • 14 officials visits to china shown by Chinese records • Islam became established in southern china • Rebellions in 878 by Chinese peasants. • Arab traders left the place and moved to South East Asia.

  7. The crusades • In 1055, Byzantine emperor feared attack from Seljuk Turks. • He asked the pope to help. Pope was the head of the roman catholic church. • Pope wanted Palestine for himself/ • In 1095 he urged European to capture Palestine. • Armies of knights(European) marched to Jerusalem. • Crusades captured Jerusalem in 1099. • Salah-ah-din came in 1138 and his army freed the Jerusalem from88 years of crusaders rule.

Saladin • A great warrior with great rules and manners • Believed in mutual respect and behavior called “chivalry”. • In 1191, during the battle with Richard the Lionheart , Richard Lionheart went ill. • Saladin sent his doctor to se him with a fruits cooled with ice to control his fever. • Richard’s horse were killed, so Saladin offered his two horses to him.

BRUNEI MOSQUE • Considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the Asia Pacific • A major landmark and tourist attraction of Brunei. • The mosque is surrounded by a large number of trees and floral gardens which in Islam symbolizes heaven. • Its dome is covered in thin layer of gold leaf( a thin layer of gold)
