  3. Additional benefits of Delegation • 1. It acts as in-service training and development for employees (prepares them for added responsibility later) • 2. It encourages self esteem • 3. The manager who does not delegate effectively becomes more of a worker than a manager (working harder……………... …………………..but accomplishing less

Obstacles to effective delegation • Lack of agreement on guidelines and standards • lack of training by subordinate • lack of confidence by supervisors in subordinates • lack of confidence by supervisors in themselves • fear of being out-shined by subordinates • perfectionist attitude • unwillingness to delegate enjoyable tasks • adherence to the status quo

Successful Delegation • Set job standards that are fair and attainable • Understand the concept • it is not only desirable….but necessary • Know subordinates capabilities • select the right person for the job • Develop goals and objectives • involves in-depth communication • Some job functions should not be delegated • performance appraisals, budgeting (possibly)

Characteristics of poor delegaters • They take work home • They work longer than their subordinates • They spend too much time doing for others what they can do for themselves • Their in-basket fills up while they’re away • They are frequently interrupted with questions for advice • They are involved in all activities
