  21. Recap of Mexican-American Relationship Relationship between Mexico and Anglo-Americans start to fall apart as more settlers from the United States move to Texas. The new settlers were more culturally tied to the United States than Mexico meaning they did not follow the requirements to live in Texas Anglo-Americans would eventually outnumber the Mexican citizens in Texas. The colonization laws continue to change for the Anglo American citizens Mexico City and the Mexican government were so far away the Anglo-Americans ignored the rules

Mexican Laws Colonization Law of 1824- guaranteed to foreigners settling in Texas security for their persons and property Colonization Law of 1825- allowed more Anglo-American colonization in Texas in specific areas and specific amounts of land. Slavery was restricted (but Americans ignored the restriction) Law of 1827 & 1829- outlaws slavery and ends slavery upsetting Americans

  28. Fredonian Rebellion You will read pages 218 - 219 and fill out the Fredonian Rebellion boxes in your Causes of the Texas Revolution.

  29. Fredonian Rebellion WHO: Haden Edwards, Benjamin Edwards (brother) WHAT: Edwards brothers had an empresario contract but people were already living on their land. Mexican Government ruled against the brothers and sided with previous settlers. Edwards rebelled and called a part of Texas the “Republic of Fredonia.” Mexican Government sent troops to capture rebels. WHERE: Nacogdoches in East Texas WHEN: 1825 WHY: Rebellion occurred because Edwards was unhappy about his contract being cancelled. • A small affair which planted the seeds of worry and doubt about the Anglos in Mexican Texas.

  36. Law of April 6,1830 You will read pages 220 - 221 and fill out the Law of April 6, 1830 boxes in your Causes of the Texas Revolution.

  37. Law of April 6, 1830 • Mexican and European settlers are encouraged to settle in Texas. They will be offered land and money • More soldiers will be sent to Texas. • Customs duties will be added to goods coming into Texas from the United States. • All immigration from the United States will no longer be allowed. • All empresario contracts are suspended. • No new slaves can be brought into Texas. The Law of April 6, 1830 was an attempt by the Mexican government to increase Mexican influence in Texas.

  39. Conflict at Anahuac • Mexican troops begin to move into Texas • Leader of the garrison: Col. Juan Bradburn • Tensions increased due to actions by Bradburn and the tax collector- • The tax collector demanded all customs duties be paid at the mouth of the Brazos River • Two men were arrested for protesting against Bradburns’ policies. • William Travis • Patrick Jack

  41. Turtle Bayou Resolutionsdeclared…. • The Texans were NOT rebelling against Mexico. • The Texans claimed that they supported Santa Anna • The Texans strongly supported the Constitution of 1824 • favored republicanism and local self-government

CONVENTIONS OF 1832 1833 • DATE: October 1, 1832 • MEETING PLACE: San Felipe de Austin • # OF DELEGATES: 58 • DATE: April 1, 1833 • MEETING PLACE: San Felipe de Austin • # OF DELEGATES: 55 • DELEGATE FROM NACOGDOCHES: Sam Houston RESOLUTIONS: 1. Allow immigration from the U.S. 2. Exempt TX from certain customs duties 3. Better protection from the Indians 4. Creation of a public school system 5. Appointment of a land commissioner in East Texas 6. Separate Texas from Coahuila – Texas have its own state Government. RESOLUTIONS: * Adopted many of the same resolutions as the first convention… 1. Allow immigration from the U.S. 2. Separate Texas from Coahuila ~ Texas have its own state government RESULT: *Stephen F. Austin was not in favor of the convention but gave his support because he hoped to keep the delegates from taking actions that would anger the Mexican Government. *Stephen F. Austin was selected to present the resolutions to Santa Anna in Mexico City. RESULT: The resolutions were never presented to the Mexican Government ~ Leaders in San Antonio did not support the convention.

  49. AUSTIN: IN MEXICO AUSTIN IS ARRESTED • Santa Anna was not in Mexico City. • Stephen F. Austin became discouraged because he had made little progress. • He wrote a letter to the leaders in San Antonio and encouraged the Texans to begin organizing a state government. • Austin finally meets with Santa Anna, who approves all the Texans’ requests except the idea of making Texas a separate state. • Austin was suspected of treason by the Mexican officials because of the letter written to the officials in San Antonio. • Austin was arrested on his return to Texas. He was returned to Mexico City and placed in jail, but he was never formally charged. • Austin was permitted to return to Texas, after being away for two years • (July 1835)
