JJ THOMSON By: Allyse Madey, John Bergman, Kacsper Nedza, Chris Freeman, Josh Ruben, Dan Hacket
Background • Born in Cheetham Hill, Manchester • Owens College, Manchester • Trinity College, Cambridge • Professor of Experimental physics • 1883- became lecturer of Trinity college • 1889- married
Perceived structure of matter • Disproved Dalton’s theory • Believed atoms were divisible into smaller sub-particles • Identified the first sub-atomic particle known as the electron
Postulates of the theory • Atoms are positively charged lumps of matter • this matter has electrons • His comparison was of a fruitcake
Experimental Design • Some particles are smaller than atoms • Identified the first subatomic particle • Cathode- ray tube experiments(see diagram next slide) • By carefully measure the effects of both magnetic and electric fields on a cathode ray • Thomson was able to determine the charge-to-mass ratio of the charged particle
Evidence in support of theory • Theories were the basic for the development of the mass spectroscope • Mass spectroscope- an instrument used for determining the masses of atoms or molecules in which a beam of ions is sent through a cambination of electric magnetic fields so arranged that the ions are deflected according to their masses (see next slide)
Sir William Crookes • Noticed a flash of light within cathode ray tube • Green flash produced by radiation smoking • Zinc-sulfide coating that had been applied to the tub • Cathode rays- stream of charged particles carrying a negative charge • This ray, from the cathode to the amode is a athode ray- led to the invention of TV. • Nobody was able to determine the mess of electrons until JJ Thomson
