  4. Caveat Emptor! Buyer Beware! 1990 Nutrition Labeling and Education Act Goal: provide consumer accurate food info. Not perfect. Ever evolving!!!! Freedom of Speech/Press allows false info to pass along as if true (internet/broadcast/articles/pamphlets). False/misleading claims about nutrition in ads/on product labels or packaging is illegal.

INGREDIENTS: Milled corn, sugar, enriched flour {reduced iron, wheat starch, pyridoxine hydrocholride, riboflavin (vitamin B6), thiamine hydrochloride (vitamin B1)},corn syrup, molasses,salt, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (one or more of the following oils coconut, cottonseed or soybean oil), sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), niacinamide, zinc oxide , BHT (preservative), annato, folic acid, vitamin D and B-12.

  14. Don’t Assume Label says You think this means FDA rule • Made with good source of n/a • Natural not processed n/a • Lightly sweetened very little sugar n/a • Low, light, reduced very low amount maybe • Free it has none has very little • High in fiber ≥5 gram/serve natural or added

  15. Understanding a Label Food Additives ARE ingredients! What are the two most commonly used food additives? What are ‘unintended additives’? Jelly Bean Rule Health claims not allowed, even if fortified

  16. Leave No Aisle Unfortified! Addition of one or more vitamins or minerals. Any food can be fortified.

  17. ‘Enriched’ Replacement of B-1, B-2, B-3, iron and folate, lost when grains are refined All refined grains must be enriched

  18. ‘Enriched’? No, think depleted! Whole grain  nutrient loss (i.e.vit, min, fiber, etc.)  Heavily processed grain  add back some lost nutrients  ‘Enriched’ grain

Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) Avg intake level +huge safety factor needed to prevent deficiency for average, healthy American Label standard is %Daily Value, based on RDA Upper Tolerable Limit (UL)- Intake > UL is dangerous Too much of a good thing, can be bad for us!

  25. GoodBetterBest!!!!! Consume more food products that make few, if any claims! Consume more products that need NO ingredient list or Nutrition Facts Panel! In the meantime…….
