  3. INTRODUCTION • Standard approach to creating broadest range of models. • All models designed around most-generous energy budgets – from matching the national average at the lower-end models to 20 x the national average at the higher-end models. • Getting off the grid should not force one to change his/hers ways of consuming electricity • Simple to understand and build, only 6 principal components used in every model: • Solar panels (PV modules) – 125Wpp or 250Wpp each, depending on the maximum allowed roof load rate (4kg/m2 to 8kg/m2), set onto brackets into a linear array (from 2 set adjacent to 48 panels set in 4 rows) • MPPT controller/charger (increase of energy harvest yield by 30-40%) • Inverter/charger (charger part optional for backup-charging) • Batteries, choice of PbSO4 or LiFePO4 (3 years or 20+ years life-cycle) • DC and AC cabling, mounting brackets, battery racks and shelves • Backup (choice of Eskom power or AC generator to provide backup power) • Large number of close proximity houses can be linked into a private “equalising” DC grid, effectively optimising the battery DoD, improving the life-cycle of the lead-acid batteries by 20-60% (from typical 3 years to 5+ years) • Flexible rooftop installation, either on a 30 degree sloping roof (tiles or corrugated sheets) or on flat-roofs (solid roof) • Single entry into the house’s SABS compliant DB, provides standard 1-phase 230V 50Hz power at up to 60A • Optional custom configuration 3-phase 400V 50Hz power can scale up to 300A per phase • Fully protected against lightning strike, overload, overheating, shorting, earthing etc.
