  1. UK PM Report Alan Grant, STFC

  2. Overview • Finances • Flat cash proposal • Staffing • Schedules • RF • TIARA

  3. Finances: Financial yr 2011/12 Excellent engineering effort this yr has put MICE into a position to install Step IV by the end of this calendar yr, as agreed in collaboration mtg Feb 2011.

  4. Finances continued: • Second half of yr we were informed that staff overheads would not be charged. • Income of £81.6k for meeting TIARA milestone & payment from US for magnet control system. • Offered £170k ‘bring forward’ spend from next yrs budget – accepted. • Offered a further £100k late December – was declined. Could not guarantee spend before March 12. This may also leave us with a small budget 2012/13 which is a critical period for installing to step IV. • November finance report shows we are currently on track with a small over spend of ~£40k. • Finances for this yr looking on track

  5. Finance continued: • Identified following wp’s as those to most benefit from • Forward spending:- • Muon beam - £45k • Mechanical - £143k • Electrical - £37k • RF - £46k • The FC wp will under spend £100k • this financial yr, • Savings in vacuum pumps, control system, and power supplies; • this together with the bring forward • spend will finance the following.

  6. Finances continued: bring forward spend £170k

  7. Finances 2012/13 onwards • Flat cash proposal for remainder of the project. • Schedule delays/levelling to satisfy flat cash requirement. • May delay Step V & Step VI beyond collaboration expectations. • Current costing show minimal spend above allocation over next 5yrs. • Costs derived from wp schedules – available.

  8. Staffing • STFC: • Stuart Greenall has replaced W.Spensley (Merit PE) as the MICE hall manager as from beginning January. • Roy Preece currently on LTA in US looking after the solenoid spectrometers returns in April. He will continue as magnet co-ordinator with Mike Courthold. • CONCERNS:- • TD re-structuring at DL in the electrical group is a grave concern. Installing step IV and all necessary sub systems is a big task with reduced staffing levels. • RF work beginning to ramp up, need full commitment of ASTEC & RF systems engineers. Plan is to recruit a graduate engineer who eventually will be based at MICE.

  9. Step IV Installation Schedule • Prior to ISIS run 15/5/12 in MICE hall, priorities. • Install solenoid rolling platforms. • Relocate KL & TOF2 to step IV position. • Hydrogen system tests. • ISIS run 15/5/12 • EMR testing • Tracker single-station test • After ISIS run 14/6/12 • Install Step IV systems - AFC, solenoids, trackers etc • Covered in AN slides!

  11. RF Layout • At the beginning of the year it was unclear how we could fit the RF system in the MICE hall due to the space constraints. • Many systems already in place - shield wall, power supplies & racks, mezzanine floors, false floor support structures. • A design requirement was also to maintain full access to AFC modules without the need to remove any of the RF system components when moving the AFC modules into the parked position. • Obviously - produce a layout addressing all the requirements of the RF engineers to provide a full working system.

  14. RF System continued • External review of RF system took place 7th December. • Review findings:- • RF system specification needs to be defined more clearly • minimum gradient requirement • gradient regulation • mechanism for resonance control • RF power amplifiers • magnetic shielding requirement & calculations • guarantee spare tubes are available from ISIS or supplier Thales. • RF distribution • properly phased distribution from one power amplifier to 2 cavities will reduce need for 1 phase shifter reducing number down from 8 to 16. • advised test of 4” coax line at MTA facility at Fermilab pressurized with N2 insulating gas, to ensure voltage breakdown does not occur before we purchase any RF distribution components. • Suggested relocation of coax system including hybrids, dummy loads to other side of shield wall to provide better access and cost saving.

  15. RF System next steps • RF collaboration working group (re)formed to address issues raised in review. • Agree test schedule at MTA for N2 4” coax system. • Preliminary magnetic field plots done – need to agree what field is permissible. • Re-design of coax location on shield wall in progress.

  16. TIARA TIARA provides modest funds for RF power. First milestone completed (M7.1). Roy Aleskan visited RAL & DL last week in December to view progress on RF system. • Roy was pleased with progress • Submitted RF review documents to TIARA. Agreed that this would be updated following reviewers findings. • Agreed this report would satisfy deliverables D7.1 & D7.3 as we are designing for both Step V & step VI simultaneously.
