  1. The Blood of the CovenantMatthew 26:17-30

  2. Blood is critical for sustaining life. • Just at the human body is physically dependent on blood for life we have a spiritual dependence on blood as well •  the blood of Jesus Christ. • Old Testament – many references to blood sacrifices • New Testament - explain the theological meaning attached to the Old Testament symbolic references to blood • Christianity is a “blood based faith.”

  3. Matthew 26:27–28 (NIV) - “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. • Luke 22:20 - “blood of the New Covenant” • Old Testament  God establishes His covenant relationship with His people, the nation of Israel. • Covenants were ratified with blood.

  4. Exodus 24:6–8 (NIV) - Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he sprinkled on the altar. Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, “We will do everything the LORD has said; we will obey.” Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.” • Old Covenant  animals were sacrificed to provide a payment for the sins of the people.

  5. Leviticus 16:30–34 (NIV) – …on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the LORD, you will be clean from all your sins …The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the people of the community. “This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites.

  6. Atonement – substitutionary payment; to make reparation payments for an offense • Leviticus 17:11 (NIV) - For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. • Atonement was accomplished through the shedding of blood. • God was reminding His people  the penalty for sin was death

  7. Old Covenant: • Limited effects: • animal sacrifices only covered the sins of the people for a year until the next Day of Atonement • people did not have direct access to God  always go through the priest • Old Covenant served an important purpose: • To point ahead to a New Covenant – a more permanent covenant

  8. Jeremiah 31:31–34 (NIV) - “The time is coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people…

  9. …No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” • This promise of a new covenant pointed ahead to Christ who came to be the permanent atoning sacrifice through the shedding of His own blood when He died on the cross.

  10. 1. Christ’s Blood Provides Direct Access to God • Christ became our permanent highpriestso we have direct access to God. • Hebrews 7:23–25 (NIV) - Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

  11. Romans 3:21–25 (NIV) - But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.

  12. 2. Christ’s Blood Provides Redemption & Forgiveness • Ephesians 1:7 (NIV) - In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace • Redemption  a term used to describe the price paid to buy back a slave (Leviticus 25:47-54) • We are born slaves  slaves to our own sinful nature • John 8:34 [ESV] – “Jesus [says], “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.” • Our selfish nature is what separates us from God.

  13. God wants to restore our broken relationship with Him so He sent someone to “buy us back” • The Lord Jesus paid for our sin with His own blood to “redeem” us from that slavery to sin. • 1 Peter 1:18–19 (NIV) - For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. • God accept us – through forgiveness.

  14. 3. Christ’s Blood Provides Cleansing from Sin • 1 John 1:7 (ESV) -  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. • Old Covenant: Sins symbolically transferred to animal to be sacrificed • Leviticus 4:31 (NIV) - In this way the priest will make atonement for him, and he will be forgiven.

  15. “cleanses” – present continuous tense • Jesus blood cleanses us from sin continually • We need to confess our sin to him. • 1 John 1:9 (ESV) - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. • We need to be “walking in the light” • sanctification” ongoing walking in the light – following Jesus

  16. The significance of the blood of Christ: • Direct access to God • Redemption and Forgiveness • Daily cleansing from sin • Give Blood – Give Life. • Jesus gave His blood – so we can experience His gift of eternal life. • What a reason to celebrate!
