  2. Football • Rectangles: American Football (NFL) is played on a field which is 120 yards long and 53 and 1/3 yards wide. Find the area of a football field.

  3. Football • Canadian Football is played on a field which is 110 yards long and 65 yards wide. Find the area of a Canadian Football league field. • By percentage, how much larger is a Canadian Football League field than an NFL field?

  4. Basketball • In the NBA, the “key” is the restricted area where no player may stay for more than 3 seconds before the referee awards the ball to the other team. The key is shaped like a rectangle with the foul line at one end of the key, 15 feet from the end line. The key is 16 feet wide. Find the area of the “key”.

  5. Basketball • In International Basketball, the key is shaped like a trapezoid. The foul line is still 15 feet from the basket but the key is 12 feet wide at the foul line but 19 feet and 6.25 inches wide at the end line. Find the area of the “key” in international basketball. • Which key is larger, the NFL or International? By how much?

  6. UFC • UFC Cagefighting takes place in a regular octagon of diagonal length 32 and each side of length 12 feet 3 inches long. Find the area of the Cagefighting surface.

  7. Curling • The Olympic sport of Curling is played on the field above where players have to get stones to roll down the ice and land in one of 3 concentric circles for different scoring amounts. The diameters of the three circles are 12, 8 and 4 respectively. Find the area shaded in Red in the diagram above for one of the playing fields.

  8. Curling • Find the area shaded in blue in the diagram. • Find the area shaded in white “between the blue and red” in the diagram.

  9. Bowling • A bowling alley is 62 feet and 10 and 3/16s inches from the foul line to the back pit. The width of the bowling alley is 42 feet. Find the area of this rectangular bowling surface. • Among the length of the bowling alley, the first 60 feet are empty space and the 10 pins are contained in the final 2 feet and 10 and 3/16s of an inch of length. Find the ratio of the area of the alley which contains the pins to the area of the empty space in the rest of the alley.

  10. Darts • A regulation dartboard is a circle with diameter of 18 inches. Find the area of a dartboard in feet. • Find the area of a mini-dartboard which is a circle of diameter 9 inches.

  11. Baseball • Find the area of a baseball diamond, which is a square of length 90 feet. • Find the area of home plate shown to the right.

  12. Horse Racing • A circular horse racing track has outer diameter of 900 feet and an inner diameter of 880 feet. Find the area of the racing surface which is between the outer rail and the inner rail.

  13. Hockey • The playing surface between the two goalies in hockey is 200 feet long and 85 feet wide. Find the area of this playing surface between the two goalies.

  14. Your Own Sport • Now, work on your own to create your own sport. This sport should have rules and be played on a field which is one of the common geometric shapes. Find the area of your field and explain how the dimensions may be changed depending on resources.
