  1. Ha Long Bay World Heritage Area

  2. Ha Long Bay is awesome and amazing. There are over 9,000 limestone karst islands in this bay and it really does make your jaw drop. • We did a 3 day 2 night cruise around Ha Long Bay and it was our first taste of an “organised” tour in Vietnam. Lessons learnt: • “organised” has a completely different meaning in Vietnam; and • you have to go with the flow or you’ll go mad.

  3. After 3 hours on a mini-bus, 1 hour at the port watching our passports get handed around to various unknown people, we finally got on our junk the Minh Hai.

  4. But what did we find on our boat? Well, besides our dodgy tour guide (who invested a lot of time telling everyone on the bus that if we were looking for a ‘lady boy’ there are plenty available in Thailand), we found out that our little group would also have the company of four older Russian gentlemen who had bought along a paid lady friend to keep them warm at night. Nice.

  5. Don’t get me wrong, we don’t have anything against Russians or paid ladies for that matter, but these guys decided to engage in an hour argument about how much they paid for the tour and where they were going to eat. Meanwhile we just sat there in the port....waiting for our lunch....which finally came out stone-cold....mmm cold french fries. Finally we set sail for the Amazing Cave.....

  6. Which was pretty amazing, and full of random strange things....... ........like........

  7. Bins shaped like penguins....

  8. ... and rocks shaped like penises

  9. But just as amazing as the cave are the floating villages. Apparently these people never set foot on dry land, but I reckon they must have at some stage cause most of them have large screen tvs and satellite dishes. They also have gardens and dogs and little aquaculture ponds....quite amazing really.

  10. We got to do some kayaking.... Cool.

  11. And lazed around on deck (only enjoyable when wearing the appropriate layers of clothing)

  12. But we couldn’t stop taking photos of big rocks sticking up out of water!

  13. And that was just day one of the tour!
