  3. GOOD ACADEMIC STANDING • Based on institutional policy. • First piece of certification process. • Participation in extracurricular activities. NCAA Bylaws 14.01.2.1 and 14.02.6

  4. TERM-BY-TERM CREDIT-HOUR REQUIREMENT • Minimum ofSIXcredits per full-time term. • Includes transfer students. • Can include credit from another institution provided certain requirements are met. Bylaw 14.4.3.1-(a) Interpretation April 13, 2005

  5. ANNUAL CREDIT-HOUR REQUIREMENT ACTUAL METHOD 24-semester/36-quarter hours. • Since the previous fall or previous two semesters/three quarters. OR AVERAGING METHOD 12-semester/-quarter hours. • Per term during each academic year in which the student-athlete was enrolled full time at any point. Bylaw 14.4.3.1-(b)

AVERAGING METHOD • Can ONLY be used for certification going into the fall term. • If a student-athlete is enrolled full time at any point during an academic year, both regular terms MUST be counted in the denominator regardless of enrollment status. • Part-time hours may be used, provided that term is also counted in the denominator. • May include summer hours. • It is going away in 2016!

  7. 75/25 RULE Hours earned during the regular academic year: • A student-athlete shall earn no less than 75% of the minimum number of semester/quarter hours required during the academic year. • No more than 25% may be earned during the summer. Bylaw 14.4.3.1.4

  8. GRADE-POINT AVERAGE • Based on total number of credits completed: Bylaw 14.4.3.2

DESIGNATION OF DEGREE • A student-athlete must designate a major by the beginning of the fifth semester or seventh quarter of collegiate enrollment. • During the first two years of enrollment, credits used to certify progress toward degree may count toward any degree program. • Beginning in year three, all credits used must be degree applicable. Bylaw 14.4.3.1.5

  11. CASE STUDY NO. 1 • Elaine Lewis is a swimmer who initially enrolled full time at your institution during the 2012 fall term, you are certifying her for the fall 2014 term. Is Elaine eligible?

The student-athlete competed during spring 2014, but needs to be certified for the 2014 fall term. Is the student-athlete eligible? Would the student-athlete have access to an exception? If so, which one?

  20. WHAT’S CHANGING AND WHEN? August 1, 2016. • Term-by-term credit-hour requirement. • Increase from six credits to nine credits per full-time term. • Hours earned during the regular academic year. • Minimum of 18 hours required. Bylaws 14.4.3.2 and 14.4.3.3 (effective 8/1/16)
