  4. Description The National Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II (better known as the "Vittoriano") is a national monument in Rome situated in Venice Square. The monument is often referred to as the "Altare della Patria". Its name could induce to think that it is a tribute to a victory. Actually the term Victorian comes from the name of Vittorio Emanuele II from Savoia, first King of Italy, to whom the monumental complex is devoted.

  6. The building of the monument • When Vittorio Emanuele II died in 1878, it was decided to build a monument that celebrated the Father of the Country. In 1880 a first international contest was launched, without result. In the following contest, in 1882, the share was reserved to the Italian technical solos. A detailed list of indications was prescribed as a complex had to be erected on the northern part of the Capitol Hill. The competitors had one year to deliver the project. The introduced proposals were 98 and of the three selected for the final choice Joseph Sacconi's was chosen. He was a young architect from the region of Marche.

  8. …special marble was used… • The project foresaw the use of the Roman travertino, but the monument was realized then in marble from Botticino, a famous stone from the region of Brescia, more easily designable. The monument would have had to be therefore a great space thought as a forum open to the citizens, in the heart of Imperial Rome, a symbol of Italy, united after the Rome of the Caesars and the Popes.
