The characteristics recorded about each individual are called ____________. • 4. Quantitative variables have measurement ________. • 5. Trade notes with a partner. Write down a few pros and cons of the notes you are looking at in terms of quality/usability/effectiveness. Be prepared to share your observations with the class.

  3. Using data lists on the calculator • STAT menu  Edit • Clearing a list – name, clear (not delete), enter • Entering data – type the numbers • Inserting data – 2nd ins • Sorting data – 2nd STAT, OPS • Entering data by formula – name, type, enter • Naming lists – name, arrow right, type name • Lose a list? - SetUpEditor • List Menu – where lists go, main screen math with lists

  4. Vocabulary – get used to this – lots of it in Stats! • Statistics – singular vs. plural • Data/datum • Case • Categorical/Quantitative/Ordinal Variables • Any others?

  5. The 5 W’s --- Why do we bother? • We are bombarded with “facts” and results of studies in the media today. Sometimes the facts seem to conflict with one another. How do we decide what to believe and what to be skeptical about? • A first step is to think carefully about where the information is coming from and how it was produced – that can go a long way toward seeing limitations or flaws with a lot of “facts” out there.

  6. The 5 W’s – make sure this information is in your notes • Who – Who is the data about? (not the researcher, might not be living or human) • What – what data do you have about the individuals? • When – when were the data produced/gathered (not when they were published)? • Where – where were the data produced/gathered? • Why – what research questions are being asked, or why is the data being collected? • How – what method(s) were used to get the data?

  7. Try It • Page 13 #2,3 with a partner, prepare to report out. (Please read and follow the directions!) • Hint – some W’s might not be known from the information provided. • Hint 2 – sometimes a W can be inferred even though it isn’t mentioned. In this case, please note that it is an inference as opposed to stated.

  8. To Do • Make sure each partner has a copy of numbers 2 and 3. • Do #’s 4-10 so that all 9 problems can be debriefed/collected as one assignment for tomorrow. • Questions?
