  1. Sodium Hydroxide In Space Amanda and YouJeong

  2. The important uses of NaOH • Making Soap • Cleaning (detergents) • Synthetic Petrol (experimental) • Used to detect carbon monoxide poisoning • Hair straightening • Water purifying

  3. Why would we need NaOH in space? • To clean appliances • To detect carbon monoxide poisoning • Water purification

  4. How is NaOH made? • To make Sodium Hydroxide you put water with molten monohydrate ,this will cause the temperature to increase . At 100 degrees you will be able to find sodium ,then the water produced will cause the sodium to become sodium hydroxide. • Or in a salt metathesis reaction where sodium carbonate is mixed with calcium hydroxide and they exchange bonds causing them to create sodium hydroxide.

  5. What equipment would you need to make NaOH in space? • Containers (that aren’t affected by sodium hydroxides’ caustic characteristics) • Molten Monohydrate • Water • Safety materials ( Safety goggles, gloves, etc.) • Sodium carbonate • Calcium hydroxide

  6. Why NaOH Should Be Chosen • Is used to purify water • Makes cleansers • Synthetic petrol ( if we have cars on the moon)

  7. Products that would not be available without NaOH • Purified water (less available) • Many cleansers (detergents) • Some hair straightening products • Synthetic petrol
