  3. Read the following ode. • What is the subject being praised? • a. talents c. feet • b. toes d. faces • 2) What characteristics make this poem an ode? Feet, oh feet, I simply cherish you, You help me in everything that I do. Feet, oh feet, you enable me to run When I lay down you take a break - have fun! Your adorable, short, stumpy toes help me balance, How I idolize you and your so many talents. Your tiny toenails are fun to decorate, I enjoy putting glitter on them - they're also fun to paint. My affectionate feelings for your ability to transport me to different places, Always bring a shock to other people's faces. So now you know exactly how much I prize you, my dear For you my idol, I will always cheer.

Sonnet Characteristics • Sonnets have fourteen lines. • Sonnets are usually in iambic pentameter. • Italian sonnets pose a question in first eight lines and answer it in the last six lines. • Shakespearean sonnets are made up of three units with four lines in each one. A couplet then sums up the poem.

  11. Beowulf Introducing the Epic Beowulf is • the first great work of • English national literature. • the epic story of the hero Beowulf, who fights the demonic monster Grendel.

Now Grendel’s  Name has echoed in our land: Sailors Have brought us stories of Herot, the best  Of all mead-halls, deserted and useless when the moon   Hangs in skies the sun had lit,  Light and life fleeing together.  My people have said, the wisest, most knowing  And best of them, that my duty was to go to the Danes’   Great king. They have seen my strength for themselves,  Have watched me rise from the darkness of war,  Dripping with my enemies’ blood. I drove  Five great giants into chains, chased
