  3. Stanza 2 • I pretend (you actually pretend) • I feel (a feeling about something imaginary) • I touch (an imaginary touch) • I worry (something that really bothers you) • I cry (something that make you sad) • I am (the first line)

GREEN • Green is an apple or a juicy cucumber • Green is the taste of fresh vegetables • Green smells like new grass and rain. • Green makes me feel very envious. • Green is the sound of a loud lawnmower and a soft sigh. • Green is a garden, forest, and a swamp. • Green is renewal. • Green is beginning again. • Green is a croaking frog.

  13. CINQUAIN • This type of poetry was developed by the Imagest poet Adelaide Crapsey. • She was born in 1914 and died when she was only 36 years old. • She wrote one and only one book of poetry. • Crapsey’s cinquain had 5 lines and a 2-4-6-8-2 syllable count.

  14. EXAMPLE OF A CINQUAIN CHERRY BLOSSOMS Cherry blossoms float on the afternoon breezes. Petals fluttering down like snow in spring.

  15. Example #2 Long Shadows Maples in the morning sunlight cast long shadows upon the snow like a roadmap of limbs.

  16. DIAMANTE • The French word diamante means diamond. • A DIAMANTE is a seven-line poem that gradually changes from one idea to a direct opposite idea. • When it is completed, its total appearance is diamond shaped. • It is a 7 line contrast poem.

PATTERN FOR DIAMANTE • Line 1=Noun/ 1st Subject • Line 2=Adjective, Adjective/Describing the 1 st subject • Line 3=(3) –ing words describing the first noun • Line 4=Noun, Noun/Describing the 1st subject Noun, Noun/relating to the 2nd subject/antonym • Line 5=(3 –ing words describing the antonym • Line 6=Adjective, Adjective/Describing the antonym • Line 7=Noun/antonym

  19. BLOTZ POETRY • This poem uses alliteration (the repetition of an initial sound. • As you compose your poem, you create an imaginary creature.

  20. Format for the Blotz Poem • Line 1: Name your creature. Begin with, “This is a …..” • Line 2 Tell where it lives (words begin with the same letter as the creature’s name. • Line 3 Tell what your creature eats. • Line 4 Tell what your creature likes. • Line 5 Tell something about your creature. • Line 6 Tell what your creature did to you.

  21. Example of a Blotz Poem“Marmaloop” This is a Marmaloop. Marmaloops live in murky, muddy marshes in Madagascar. Marmaloops eat mangos, meunster cheese, marmalade, and milkshakes. Marmaloops make messes, mumble meaningless facts, and miff mean mammals. Marmaloops like M&Ms, monster mega Mondays, monsoons in Mongolia, and meerkats . This Marmaloop mentioned that he might marry me.

  22. SENSE POEMS • Sense poems, of course, appeal to the five senses. • The senses of touch, sight, hearing, tasting and smelling.

  23. Format for Sense Poem • 1. Think of a place that is special. • 2. Form an image in your mind of this place. • 3. Think about all the beauty that surrounds the place. • 4. Then complete the following statements.

  27. LIMERICK • A limerick is a rhymed humorous or nonsense poem which consists of 5 lines and originated in Limerick, Ireland. • It has a rhyme scheme of a-a-b-b-a and a syllable structure of 9-9-6-6-9

  28. Limerick Example “Man from Aruba” There once was a man from Aruba. Whose favorite hobby was scuba. Every day he would wish, He could spear a big fish. But settled instead for canned tuna.

  29. EPITAPH • An epitaph is a brief poem written to praise a deceased person. • It usually rhymes.

  30. EPITAPH EXAMPLE What happened to me was not good, Hit by a car, bounced off the hood. Would get up, if only I could. Now here I lay, where once I stood.

  31. QUATRAIN • A QUATRAIN is a poem consisting of 4 lines of verse with a specific rhyming scheme. • Some rhyming schemes are: • abab • abba • aabb

QUATRAIN EXAMPLE • Lord of Deceit • Trapped within a haze of fear, • The Lord of Lies does appear. • Clouded by so much that’s wrong, • Truth gets twisted by his song. • Turning love and joy to pain, • Hidden by the falling rain, • When hate and fear begin to form, • Tragedy becomes the norm.

  33. QUATRAIN“The Green Bird” • On top of a mountain sits a green bird. • The songs that it sings is the best ever heard. • When it open its mouth all the animals cheer, • For this song is a sound that all want to hear.

  34. QUATRAIN EXAMPLE CONT.“Hurtful Lies” • Hurtful lies tear lives apart • And cause more harm to a heart. • Once the pain and hate begin, • Nothing is the same again. • Once the lie has been revealed, • Secrets are no more concealed. • Then the healing can undo • What he has done unto you.

  35. CONCRETE POEM • A concrete poem is one in which the words make a shape. • The concrete poem is as much about the words as the look and the shape of the poem itself…thus it is sometimes called a SHAPE POEM.

  36. Example of Shape Poem I am a tree who reaches out to you with love I’ll share. I am here to embrace, my branches of tenderness. I am a tree which extends, water me in tender care as I stand by your side extending my heart always.
