  2. Gilded Age • Gilded Age, implying that under the glittery, or gilded, surface of prosperity lurked troubling issues.

  3. Gilded Age • Issues like poverty, unemployment, and corruption.

  4. Separate but Equal • Jim Crow laws. • Southern states passed laws that separated blacks and whites.

  5. Plessy v. Ferguson

  6. Supreme Court upheld segregation as long as states maintained “separate but equal” facilities for both races.

  7. Southern states enacted laws such as poll taxes and literacy tests.

  8. Activists • W.E.B. Dubois • Ida B. Wells • Booker T. Washington

  9. Mexican Americans struggled to keep their lands in the Southwest.

  11. Corruption Plagues Government • Corruption plagued the government. • Graft--bribery and corruption

  12. Tariffs, Civil Service, and Monetary Policy • The Pendleton Act. • Created a civil service system for the federal government.

  13. People who wanted to work for the government were now required to take an exam.

  14. Farmers Face ComplexProblems • The prices paid for crops declined significantly.
