  2. Our Focus is the Internet • Global organization with 15-year history • Focus is keeping the Internet an open and universally accessible platform for innovation, creativity, and economic opportunity • We do this through our work in: • Standards • Education • Public Policy

Global with a Local Perspective • Offices in North America, Europe and Australia • Regional Bureaus – regional leaders with ties to the local Internet community • Africa, Latin America, Asia (future) • Chapters in 70+ countries • Leverage our international policy leadership at the regional/local levels • Involved in the Internet’s development at the local/regional levels

  4. NRENs Link to ISOC • Founding members of ISOC • Many are current members • ACOnet, CERN, Hungarnet, NORDUnet, NYSERnet, SUNET, SURFnet, SWITCH, TERENA, UNINETT, UKERNA, etc. • Other ISOC members associated with R&E networking organisations • CERN, Eqypt’s MCIT, WIDE Project, etc.

Supporting the Standards Process • Home to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) • ISOC supports the operational and administrative functions of the IETF • IETF is the premiere standards setting body for the Internet • The work of the IETF is critical to the future structure of the Internet

Hot Topics: Routing & Addressing • Internet growth creates scalability problems for the current routing and addressing system • IAB Workshop - October 2006 • IRTF Routing Research Group (RRG) • RRG to produce a list of prioritized design goals and a recommendation for a routing and addressing architecture

  7. Hot Topics: Unwanted Traffic • IAB Workshop – March 2006 • Foster interchange between the operator, standards, and research communities • Assess the state of affairs (e.g., spam, phishing, denial of service attacks) • Examine existing counter measures • Collect input for action planning

  8. Looking Ahead:The Future of the Internet • Technological & architectural issues facing the Internet • Security, mobility, service quality • Ensuring the Internet’s future stability and growth, while maintaining the Internet’s core principles

  9. Capacity Building through Education and Training • Support Internet deployment to people in developing countries • Promote self-sustaining communities able to deploy and exploit local & regional education and training • Educate policy makers on the intersection of technology and public policy

Current Education Initiatives • ccTLD Workshops and Tutorials • Workshops provide hands-on technical training for ccTLD operators • Tutorials cover policy and management issue • Regional Network Operators Groups (NOGs) • Funds fellowships for individuals to attend AfNOG, SANOG, WALC, and PACNOG meetings and training sessions

Current Education Initiatives • INET Regional Conferences • Bring together technologists and policymakers to discuss technology and policy issues of regional interest and importance • Research and Development Small Grants • Support and participate in the FRIDA (Latin America) and PanASIA grant programs • Grants for ICT projects, developed by regional, not-for-profit research teams

  12. ISOC Fellowship to the IETF • New program launched in 2007 • Sponsor technologists from developing countries to participate in IETF meetings • High proportion from the academic community, including professors, researchers and graduate students
