  3. Network Design -Novell Netware -Citrix Winframe -Protocols

  4. Netware Client Side Utilities -Some require Supervisor privileges • Requires a drive mapping to \\<server_name>\SYS (or <server_name>/SYS:) • Syscon.exe • Fconsole.exe • Pconsole.exe • Volinfo.exe • Setpass.exe • Session.exe • Send.exe • Slist.exe • Userlist.exe • Whoami.exe • Rconsole.exe • Monitor.nlm • Install.nlm

  5. Syscon.exe • Accounting • Change Current Server • File Server Information • Group Information • Supervisor Options • User Information

  6. Fconsole.exe • Broadcast Console Message • Change Current File Server • Connection Information • Down File Server • Status • Version Information

  7. Pconsole.exe • Change Current File Server • Print Queue Information • Print Server Information

  8. Volinfo.exe • Volumes • Volume Name • KiloBytes • Change Servers • Update Interval

  9. Setpass.exe • Used to change your own password • Cannot be used to change another user’s password

  10. Session.exe • Change Current Server • Drive Mappings • Group List • Search Mappings • Select Default Drive • User List

  11. Send.exe • MS-DOS command used to broad cast a text message to a user or group

  12. Slist.exe • MS-DOS based command used to return a list of available Novell Netware servers

  13. Userlist.exe • MS-DOS based command used to return a list of Bindery/NDS authenticated users

  14. Whoami.exe • MS-DOS based command used to return Bindery/NDS authentication information for your own network session (logon)

  15. Rconsole.exe • Must be run from the \public directory of the SYS: volume • Used for remotely administrating a Novell Netware server • Gives the impression of actually being at the server console itself • RSPX protocol required as well as remote.nlm • Almost all server side software based functions can be performed through Rconsole.exe providing there is a network transport available

  16. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • When navigating the monitor through Rconsole, use +/- keys to view different loaded modules • When navigating the console while physically AT the server console itself, use the <Alt>+<Esc> keys • Similar to <Alt>+<Tab> ‘ing your way through different loaded Windows applications • <Ctrl>+<Esc> at the console will actually display a menu of possible console choices - only available while physically at the file server console

  17. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Connection Information • Use to monitor file reservations in use • Use to manually clear connections (force login disconnection)

  18. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Disk Information • Use to check physical storage device information (HDD) • Use to modify physical storage device properties

  19. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • LAN Information • Use to monitor per protocol, per frame, and per network card statistics

  20. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • System Module Information • Displays add on modules and patches subsequent to NOS build

  21. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Lock File Server Console • Use to password protect file server console from intruders who gain access to the server locally or who gain access via Rconsole.exe • Similar to Lock Workstation command in Windows NT

  22. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • File Open/Lock Activity • Use to view files currently in use and those that may be locked

  23. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Resource Utilization • Use to monitor key Netware resource allocation and performance • Similar to Windows NT Performance Monitor (Perfmon.exe)

  24. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Exit • Use to unload the Monitor.nlm from the server console • The command “unload monitor.nlm” can also be used to unload the monitor • Use the command “load monitor.nlm” from the system console to manually load the monitor

  25. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Monitor.nlm can only be loaded once concurrently • If the monitor is not available (unloaded) when at the console, simply use the “load monitor.nlm” command to load it

  26. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Install.nlm • Load from the console by using the command “load install.nlm”

  27. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Install.nlm • Use to set installation, startup, and administrative options

  28. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Disk Options • Use to Format physical disks • Use to create and delete Netware partitions on physical drives • Use to set up software RAID level 1 on drives • Use to perform physical disk characteristic tests on physical drives (similar to Microsoft’s chkdsk or scandisk)

  29. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Volume Options • Use to add, modify, and delete Netware volumes on logical partitions • Use to manually mount or dismount volumes • Netware syntax • \\SRVNOV1\CMSS (UNC) • SRVNOV1/CMSS: (Netware) • SYS is a required Netware volume • Additional volumes usually house user and application data

  30. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • System Options • Mainly used to modify startup configuration files which identify the operating environment • Startup.ncf (similar to config.sys) • Autoexec.ncf (similar to autoexec.bat)

  31. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Product Options • One way of installing additional Netware or aftermarket products • Similar to InstallShield Wizard

  32. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Exit • Use to properly exit and unload the Install.nlm • “unload install.nlm” can also be used from the System Console

  33. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Exiting Rconsole.exe properly • Do not hit the <Esc> key and answer yes - this will exit the monitor.nlm only as shown in the example

  34. Rconsole.exe (cont.) • Exiting Rconsole.exe properly • Use <Shift>+<Esc> to exit Rconsole.exe properly - you should see a display similar to that shown in the example

  35. System Console Commands • Time • Returns the current date and time of the file server

  36. System Console Commands (cont.) • Set time = • Use to change the date and/or time of the file server

  37. System Console Commands (cont.) • Disable login • Prohibits any subsequent logins to the Netware server • Enable login • Enables subsequent login activity • Useful for keeping users off the server if maintenance is required

  38. System Console Commands (cont.) • Mount • Use to mount Netware volumes manually • Dismount • Use to dismount Netware volumes • System Console will alert you if a dismount is attempted on a volume that has open files

  39. System Console Commands (cont.) • Load • Use to load Netware Loadable Modules (.NLM’s) • “load xxxx.nlm” • Unload • Use to unload Netware Loadable Modules • “unload xxxx.nlm” • NLM’s are similar to Windows NT services, applications, or TSR (terminate and stay resident) programs • NLM’s can be loaded manually at the console or in the Startup.ncf/Autoexec.ncf environment files at boot-up

  40. System Console Commands (cont.) • Set • Use to view all environment variables and file server configuration options • Use to create or change any number of configuration changes on the file server

  41. System Console Commands (cont.) • Track (on/off) • Use to toggle Netware router tracking on/off • When enabled, the server console will display all inbound and outbound connection sessions with local and remote hosts on the network • Similar to Microsoft Networking “nbtstat -s” and “netstat” commands

  42. Netware Certifications • CNA-Certified Novell Administrator • CNE-Certified Novell Engineer • MCNE-Master Certified Novell Engineer • CNI-Certified Novell Instructor • MCNI-Master Certified Novell Instructor • Others...
