  4. This is what the “M” stands for in MAIN- Germany proved their execution of this idea when they sent the Panther to challenge French holdings in Africa.

  5. Militarism

  6. As a result of the Franco-Prussian War, France had to cede this land. They got it back after WWI.

  7. Alsace-Lorraine

  8. Nationalism took hold in this peninsula made up of Slavic peoples but controlled by foreign Empires, such as Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire.

  10. The dismissal of this German chancellor, who was behind several of the alliances, changed the climate of European politics

  12. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand by the Black Hands might’ve had something to do with Austria-Hungary preventing this country from annexing Albania and Macedonia. With the Austrian Ultimatum rejected, war became a reality.

  13. Serbia

  14. This was Germany’s original “game plan”, which was put in place to quickly defeat France and avoid a two-front war.

  15. Schlieffen

  16. This was the area between enemy trenches where no soldier would dare go.

  17. No Man’s Land

  18. This allied country was suffering countless defeats on the Eastern front, ceding land to Germany. Too bad the Germans couldn’t keep the land after the war.

  20. It was at this battle that the Allied forces used taxis to halt the German advance after they crossed through neutral Belgium and into France.

  22. Though this campaign was an utter failure, it influenced Allied tactics in WWII and increased the sense of nationalism among Australians and New Zealanders.
