Jesse Jackson born on October 8, 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina. • His nicknames include “Conscience of the Nation” and “the Great Unifier.” • August 9, 2000 President Clinton awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. • Left public schools to enroll in the University of Illinois on football scholarship and graduated in 1964. • Left his studies to work full time on the Civil Rights Movement with MLK.

JesseJacksonCont. • 1965 he become full-time organizer for Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) • December, 1971 founded People United to Serve Humanity (PUSH) • 1984 Jackson founded National Rainbow Coalition • September 1996 he merged the two to form the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. • Ran for President as a Democrat Representative in 1984 and 1988 as well.

RainbowPUSHCoalition • PUSH was dedicated to improving economic conditions of black communities across the US. • First Rainbow Coalition sought equal rights for all Americans ( mainly voting rights, social program demands, and affirmative action for minority groups.) • The two merge to form Rainbow PUSH Coalition with a mission to protect, defend, and gain civil rights by making economic and educational rights equal for all. • Promoting peace justice worldwide was Jackson’s main goal of it.
