  17. Why Blended Learning? A individual student’s story of why Blended Learning

  18. What is your why? What are your 3 biggest challenges or goals for your district for the next 1-2 years? Work with your group to identify your top three challenges/goals and note them in your workbook on page 9 Be prepared to share one of your goals with the group You have 5 minutes to complete this activity

How does Blended Learning address these goals and challenges? • Take a few moments to review the questions on page 10 – would you use blended learning to address any of these common issues? • What do you expect to accomplish in years 1-3 of your Blended Learning Program? • Consider the following questions: • How many students will you serve? • What criteria will determine which students you serve? • What grade levels will you serve? • What facility will you use? • Take 10 minutes to work with your group to determine your goals for years 1-3 of your blended learning program.

  20. Funding your Blended Learning Program Outside of the grant will additional resources be needed? If so, where could that additional funding come from? Take 2 minutes and brainstorm where additional funds could come from to supplement the funding of your blended learning program.

  22. Align to District Goals/Priorities Buy-in and Support are critical!!! Aligning your goals to district goals and priorities will increase buy-in Identifying key stakeholders early in the process and getting them onboard will help with buy-in and support Take 5 minutes and identify the key stakeholders (in priority order) that you need to get onboard early to back your blended learning program Who are some of the stakeholders you identified?

Keys to gaining support What are the keys for gaining support for your blended learning program? • Consider the following: • Parental support • Student interest • Funding secured • Teacher support (including support in contract negotiation and local unions) • School board support • Take 5 minutes to work in your groups to determine the keys to gaining support for your blended learning program

Identify your core team Your initial team is critical in the success of your program • Take 2 minutes and identify the key individuals you will need to involve early in order to make your program successful (can be individuals or roles) • Consider the following groups: • Technical support • Teacher Leader • Curriculum Director • Administrator • Student panel

  27. Plan Your Program How will you select your administration and team players? Large group activity: What skill sets do you want administrators and key team players to have? Are these skills different than what you would look for in a traditional school administrator or teacher?

What Blended Learning Models will you Implement? • What model type(s) will you use? • Rotation • Flex • Enriched Virtual • A la carte • Will students be part-time, full-time or both? • How will you support different grade levels in your blended learning program? • What percentage of time will students spend in school and off campus? • How will this program fit with your master schedule? Will you offer flexible hours outside of your master schedule? • Take 20 minutes to work in your groups to write our the answers to these questions

  32. Expectations and Responsibilities Work in your group to start brainstorming the expectations and responsibilities for each group of stakeholders You have 15 minutes to complete this activity

Professional Development and Training What types of professional development and training would you offer team members? • Take 2 minutes and brainstorm some ideas on your own Supporting teachers in a personalized integrated learning experience will require new instructional strategies…how will you support your teachers in applying the listed best practices? Take 5 minutes with your group to write down ideas for how you will support your teachers in this new environment

Review Analyzing data requires you to look at information with a 360 degree view… Whole group – Look at large trends within the majority of your students Small group – Focus on smaller trends and common, conspicuous characteristics among them Individualized – Look at the outliers in your data and identify specific student needs or trends

How will you measure success? • In your group take 15 minutes to answer the following: • List the two or three ways you’ll measure your program success • Determine the key objectives and goals you want to achieve and how you want to measure them (refer back to page 10 & 11 to review your goals)
