  2. Why is Vietnam Unpopular? • Is there a clear reason for our fighting? • Is there an evil enemy that every agrees with? • Like Hitler for instance. • Are we winning? Will we win? • Who is going to war?

  3. Introducing the Television • Vietnam is the first televised war. • Uncensored, what would we see? • Americans for the first time see the dirty and, gory parts of war. • Images of maimed and dying civilians and even children ruin support for the war.

  4. My Lai Massacre • Soldiers sent on a mission to the village of My Lai • Told it was full of VC and VC sympathizers • Told that all innocent civilians will be gone to market by 7am • Anyone left behind is the enemy. • Men, women and children are massacred, causes domestic and global outrage.

  5. Backlash • Support for Vietnam plummeted after My Lai • Kent State Shootings, May 4 1970 • Most protests were peaceful, as was this. • Troops fired 67 rounds in 13 seconds • 4 killed, 9 wounded. • Caused national backlash of 4 million students protesting • Shut down universities.

Your Task (20 minutes) • Pick up lyric sheets to one of the three songs we’ve listened to. • Answer the questions in groups of 2 - 3 people • List any imagery you notice in the lyrics. • Put yourselves in the shoes of a 1960s/70s teenager, how would you this make you feel? • Put yourselves in the parents shoes, would you let your child listen to this song? • How would this song make a Vietnam War Vet feel? • Create your own verse to a Vietnam Protest song.
