1. World of Work Session One - Exploration

2. Learning Objectives Identify facts about a variety of jobs. Prepare to meet adult workers in the next session. Know the difference between closed and open questions.

3. Success Criteria I can use work vocabulary whilst playing a trumps style card game. I can talk about the qualifications, pay and skills of different jobs. I can use closed and open questions appropriately.

4. Warm Up – List Jobs What jobs do we already know about? See how many jobs your group can think of. In groups, write a list of ‘Jobs I Know’. Take three minutes to write as many as you can. Feedback one job each to the class, trying not to duplicate a previous answer. Circle and put your name against three that you would like to do when you are older.

5. Warm Up – Job Pictionary One member from each group will come to the teacher who whispers a job name Go back to the group and draw the job – no words or sound. Rest of group guesses the job – whisper! When you guess the job, go to the teacher for the next one. Winning group is the first to guess all the jobs on the list.

8. Career Cards - how to play the game Play the game in pairs, one deck of cards per pair. Shuffle and deal all the cards face down. Each player holds their cards face up, in the palm of their hand. Players can only look at their top card. One player starts by stating the job at the top of the card and reading out an item from the top card (e.g. ‘Starting Pay per hour...£12’). The other player then reads out their job and the same item. The one with the highest value wins and places both cards on the bottom of their pile. It is then their turn again to choose an item from the next card. If two or more cards share the top value, then both cards are placed in the middle and the same player chooses again from the next card. The winner of the hand takes the cards in the middle as well. The person with all the cards at the end is the winner!

9. Career Cards – after game discussion Which jobs were the best ? Were there any jobs you would like to do? Were there any jobs you would like to know more about? Is there more you would like to know about the meaning behind the scoring elements?

10. Closed Questions Closed questions have only a Yes/No answer For example, ‘Do you wear a uniform?’,’Do you work outdoors?’ Secretly choose a Career Card and see how long it takes your group to guess by asking closed questions only.

11. Homework Find out about one job and make a ‘Career Card’ like the ones you have been playing with. Use the library, internet or interview an adult you know. Make your ‘Career Card’ A4 size. Use the template as a guide.

12. Open Questions Open questions are questions which cannot be answered Yes/No. They usually start with ‘What...?’, ‘Why...?’ or ‘How...?’ They are good for finding out more information, especially about people’s real experiences and feelings. Practice asking your teacher open questions to find out what their job is really like for them.
