  1. Balancing Redox Reactions with Oxidation Numbers (see p 462) • Assign oxidation number • Identify oxidation and reduction • Determine the # of e- lost and gained per atom or ion, then multiply by subscripts to determine the number of electrons transferred.

  2. Determine the lowest common multiple for electrons from step 3. • Multiply the electrons by a coefficient required to reach the lowest common multiple. Place the coefficients into the equation. • Balance other atoms by inspection if possible

  3. For Neutral Environments: • add H2O to balance O and H atoms as needed For Acidic Environments: • add H2O to balance O atoms • add H+ to balance H atoms
